Rock Auto fuel pump won’t seal

As the title suggests, I installed an Airtex fuel pump from Rock Auto in my 05 6 speed. I have the nut as tight as I can get it, and I’m not able to spin the pump by hand, but fuel still leaks past the o-ring. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggested solutions? It honestly seems like the pump is maybe 1/8” too tall for the tank.

if i recall the tq spec is 90 ft lbs. and you have to do it with a correct fuel pump tool. the basket is spring loaded, make sure nothing is under basket.

beers

I took it to the dealer and they confirmed that it is all the way tight. I used a rental tool from Auto Zone to remove and reinstall the nut.

I had the same problem with the fuel pump I bought from Rock Auto, I dont think it was an Airtex though. I installed the pump with the help of a mechanic friend, everything went normal. Left his house to fill up with gas, car leaked gas like crazy. It was overflowing out the top of the tank around the fuel pump ring. Got the car towed to my local mechanic and he informed me there was a recall regarding the fuel pump ring and to bring it to the dealer. Spoke to the dealer and they replaced the fuel pump and ring under recall for free. So at 140K miles I paid for a Rock Auto pump but got an factory OEM one essentially at half price. The dealer told me the only reason they replaced the pump was because it was aftermarket, the pump wasn't necessarily part of the recall.

I had the recall done last year. My fuel pump died last week, so I bought the Rock Auto pump to fix it.

Also, my dealer did NOT replace the retaining ring. They told me it’s not part of the recall.

Yea, the ring was included. So what DID they replace then? Just the gasket?

I honestly think they saw that nothing was cracked, and didn’t touch anything.

I think the best solution would be to purchase an OEM Mazda o-ring and install it with the Airtex pump that you purchased from Rock Auto.
