Remove Fan motor without removing assembly? Plus weird fan death.
 

Hello guys. My passenger side fan stopped working. Relays checked out ok. Way back last year the damn rubber grommet got stuck and jammed the same fan. It worked until last week though. Could it be because of that? It's like, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I can tell from the temp spikes from my OBD2 scanner. When it's not working, the temp would climb up pretty fast. And then maybe 5 hours later when I take the car out, the temps stay fine, and the fan works. But for the past couple of days it stopped working.

What could be the issue?

If the motor is dead, is there a way to replace the motor only without pulling the assembly out?

Is there a way to get the fan assembly out without pulling out the radiator?

I don't want to break the radiator nipple off.

yes it's possible, I did it once before, but it's such PAIN IN THE ASS that u don't wanna do it unless u really have no choice.

but first thing first u should MAKE SURE the connector on the fan motor is making contact, I seen a case that the connector is just not making contact EVEN it's completely in. gotta squeeze the pin inside a bit then the fan works again 100%.

Yeah you CAN I guess but it would be a major PIA and the risk of breaking something is high.

i don't see why anyone would want to try. the motor is screwed in from the rear so there is no way of doing it without a lot of wiggling, cursing and blood stains.

on a side note, i just take out both lower grommets now. those things are evil.

I had to do it that time, omfg it was such nightmare ... like u said its screw on the other side, I had to lift it up like an inch or 2 , slip my hand in ... yes it was bloody.

just stick a prybar in there and wedge the whole thing out. i kinda wonder why they didn't at least attempt to make it an inch shorter to match the width of the car's frame rails.

Thanks for the reply guys! I checked the fan connector and it was MELTED! The corner of the motor where the connector goes to was melted too. I checked if the connector gets power, and it does, but the fan doesn't work. I'm guessing having the fan jammed for around 2 hours permanently damaged it, and then after removing the grommet, It worked fine, but slowed down over time and finally died? It got jammed last year, and the fan stopped working last week.

So it's new motor time now. My mechanic says this motor is a standard size. I guess I could find a similar motor from the junkyard. Heres the question. Wouldn't the fan speed be an issue? Would a same size motor spin at the same speed? Or do the specs change, even if the size is the same? I'm asking because these cars put out a ton of heat.

I read that the best way to take the radiator out without breaking that nipple is to splice the horse and pull it off. That's a brilliant idea. BUT, how do you put the new hose back on without breaking it?
