So far, at 14000 miles, I haven't needed warranty service but I asked the service writer last time I had my oil changed. His response was that if the service required over 4 hours then I would get a loaner. 4 hours seemed kind of long but I haven't needed to test it yet.

My dealer doesn't seem to give loaners, but they do ask at each service if I require a ride, and if so, they have a guy that gives rides to people. This is for both to and from the dealership. Of course, I do live in a puny little town/city where 10 miles in any direction takes you to the edge of it. I imagine on the mainland, where cities are pretty huge or you could go across another state's dealership for service, that they'd be more hesitant about loaners or giving rides.

This answer doesn't cut it. This is the real world. Zoom was offering very good advice.

What would people say if there were car fires reported before a recall? I think that if they are proactive about a problem, then we as customers should respond positively. I think that by nature, we are a little greedy, selfish, and impatient.....so when a new car is being designed, they want to get it right, but that also want it done fast, because we want it now. Garbage in, garbage out...we still have "people" designing, and assembling, anything can go wrong. Let's just be glad that all thoughs people involved in development of the RX-8 and many other cars we love, got something right...because we love our 8's.

Hang tough guys. I know it can be a tad frustrating with all of the reflashes, and such...but remember that most of the frustration would be eliminated by a competant service department at your dealer...and we all know few of us have those. I am curious to see if the R flash has anything to do with this potential recall, and I certainly hope that they manage to do what they need to do about high idle temps without adding fuel to the AFR's throughout the rev range. My car feels really good right now, except for the heat...

Kwullen 07-11-2005 09:03 AM

I've worked with Mazda engineers in the transmission division for over ten years. I make the plastic containers they ship all their front wheel drive transmissions and the RX8 engine in. Hah!! I had an 8 engine in my shop a year before they came out!
In any case, I've NEVER worked with a group of people (the Japanese engineers) that are more dedicated to their company's good name and the quality of their product.
IF they are doing this recall, it needs to be done.
Have there been some issues with the car? Yes.
Is it one of the most technologically advanced cars, especially for the money, out there? Yes.
I may have some alterior motives since Mazda has been such a good customer, over the years, but believe me, the RX8 will be a "cult" car over time like few others. It has a balance and feel like few others and NONE anywhere close to this price range.
Alot of the people on this forum remind me of the typical racer - horsepower, horsepower, horsepower. I'd walk around other drivers' cars while they were complaining I must have an illegal motor and could tell them 15 things to make their cars faster that they totally ignore.
I must be faster because I must have more horsepower. BS, the total package is what makes the car and the RX8 is BY FAR the best package out there short of an exotic like an NSX.
Well, I don't know about any of you, but I paid about 1/3rd the price of an NSX for my RX8 and about 1/10th the price of a Ferrari. The first 2 to 3 years of the NSX ate 400 dollar apiece front tires off of them like Micheal Moore going through a Dunkin Donuts and the 30,000 mile maintenance on a Ferrari 360 is so expensive people are selling them before it's due. Rich people.
So cool it awhile and let Mazda take care of the issue, as we all know they will do.

Well said Kwullen!! It's all about perspective.

Perhaps you misunderstood my intent  it wasn't intended to "cut it"

just an observation made in support of what he and others are saying ... :o

Just came back from my dealer (Southern States Mazda of Raleigh), and told the salesman about this 'recall'. After speaking with the Sales Manager, he confirmed the recall, and that I should call the service deparment to schedule an appointment.

I told them that the recall was specifically for heat-shield upgrades, so I think that we were thinking along the same track.

Check with your service department, always safe than sorry. I'll post later to let you all know how it goes.

my car was built middle of april 05, can anyone post some under car shots of their 04/early 05 and i can post my more recently built car. maby we can see some differences...maby not, just a thought. it would have to wait till i get home from work anyhow.

i wish they had put in an electric fuel pump...so that on a hot day (the last week or so here in central fl) i hear my radiator fans come on when i get home from work (amb temp gauge is around 100) now thats fine, but since the car has the v mount setup, the fans dont seem to help move much air THRU the engine bay, just over the radiator, now if you could circulate the coolant thru the system, while the fans are running, then that is doing some good.

as it is I have about 5 miles on a back road just before I get to my house, its a long straight road, never many cars on it, i always shut the A/C off and run the heater full blast with the windows and sunroof open for that last 5 miles and go about 50-60mph, then when i park in the driveway I can still hear the fans on the radiator running, so I let the car idle till the fans go off. then shut her down. although the fans still come on sometimes.

its not the most enjoyable thing in the world, but being a little hot the last 5 minitues of my commute is worth it to me, to try and take care of my baby.

as far as heat in the cabin, its not too bad as far as me feeling it, but I do notice that my cold drinks only stay cold in the cup holder for about 30 mins if Its hot out and im in trafic.

i was thinking about getting some header/exhaust wrap, like I used on my miata, to help cut the radiant head down....but maby i should wait till after the recall, i wouldnt want them trying to tell me i was holding TOO MUCH heat in the exhaust and roasted an o2 or something.

Yeah, lets see those underbody shots!

On the last bit quoted......you meant water pump didn't you.... :)

Like the ECU, the battery box is also designed to cool the battery with air flow. Ref - the TSB that refers to the replacement battery. Just thought I'd cloud the issue a bit more.

I'm with some of the rest here, no big deal if it's free and prompt. Although I would like to add if I was told I needed a new mill, I would tell them to keep the car. NO MATTER WHAT a car will NEVER run as well as it did with first motor. I have heard terrible story after terrible story when it comes to ANY car engine swap, let alone some of the techs workin for Mazda. I know i'd have to keep the car but man, I'd probably forget my keys in it with the windows down in Lynn or something. I bet if a theif knew it had a new engine they would touch it either

olddragger 07-11-2005 04:02 PM

Ky
dont set with the fans going and the engine idleing when you have a choice! It blows hot air right past your coil packs dude and thats not good. Turn your fans off and lift the hood instead. Do the rest of the oldtimers here remember last summer season and the people that had coil packs go bad? Never really found out the cause and it didnt happen to everyone. Its just an observation.
Mazda will fix this. And that guy is right for the money this is the best car out there. Oh yea dont wrap your exhaust pipes ---they will deteriotae fast if you do. A heat shiled would work but dont wrap the pipes.
This is going to be interesting.

OD,
I've had the headers on my Stingray wrapped for 15+ years without issue. And glad I did it, as it helped with the vapor locking I was having.

I got an 05 built in 11/04 and my fans come on when I shut off the engine only 2x the past 2 months, and it's also hot down here in South Florida. I don't shut off the a/c and turn on the heater full blast, I'd rather not suffer heatstroke while behind the wheel :D

You're better off not idling the engine when you get home, just shut down the engine and let the fan come on by itself. You'll actually find that the electric fan won't need to come on as much doing it this way (meaning the car does not get as hot). You can also help by lifting your hood up if you got your car in a garage to help dissipate the heat. I also make sure to drive easy the last 2 miles to help reduce engine temp.

olddragger 07-11-2005 04:49 PM

Hey RX eightr,
How ya been man. Wrapping on that vette may do well but th 8 has a much hotter exhaust temp and people have advised me not to do it. Beside the cupholder can keep my taco warm.

Hey KY, forget the heroic measures and just drive your car home and shut it off. Open the hood if you want to but I wouldn't bother.

Not to worry, convection is circulating coolant through the radiator and the engine as long as the thermostat is open. The thermostat is open as long as the coolant is above its set point.

All water pumps have a bypass channel or bypass hose so that the water pump does not block convection flow even when the pump is not turning.

sco 07-11-2005 06:58 PM

On the InCar prototype I'm running I have coolant temperature displayed all the time... I've watched this as I've pulled up in the garage to see how it behaves when idling... I've yet to see the temperature drop as a result of idling it in the garage. So I third the motion that you should shut down straight away.

what's the latest?

zoom44 07-11-2005 09:13 PM

there is no "latest"! all the information there will be for a week or more is already in this thread as has already been stated.

You are the same people who are toxic in companies by spreading around water-cooler talk. When the information is released, think and then act. :(

I'd suspect a significant part of the heat load on the coils is internal and electrical; i.e. I wouldn't think that the fan blowing would have much bearing once the ignition was off.

demob05 07-12-2005 11:03 AM

Reading over everything here, seems that the common denominator is the Heat... this has always been inherent in a rotary engine design, so wanted to know from the ol RX-7 owners if they experienced similar type of recalls on their earlier models?? Or are issues also developing because the Renesis, at 1.3L, produces more power to weight Naturally Aspired of course, than any previous 2 rotor NA Rotary engine??

DARKMAZ8 07-12-2005 11:25 AM

Reving the car while idling is not a good idea for any car. Rotaries already run extremely hot so why make matters worse. Just don't rev your car to look cool!!!!
