Rear lug stud snapped
So I was taking my wheels off to paint them (came out real nice BTW), I took off 3 wheels no problem but on the driver's side rear (the final one) a lug nut stud snapped partially inside the nut. I have replacement studs but my issue lies with installation. I've removed the old one that broke but cannot find a way to get the new one in. I've seen posts that say once the bearing is removed it must be scrapped but why? Can I not remove the wheel hub, install the new stud and just put it back on? Any and all suggestions are MUCH appreciated. I want to have car fixed by monday:icon_tup:

Looks like there is no way around removing the hub.
I would just run with one missing, until I could get it to the shop and let them replace ALL the studs with new. But that's me, and I've already had 5 beers..... |
i tried to use a puller to pull the rear hub... and it didn't come off because i believe it uses a circle clip / retaining ring to secure it in the knuckle (in addition to the hub / axle nut).
http://foxed.ca/rx7manual/2003mazdar..._S01_0351.html See rear hub / knuckle removal guide. You pretty much have to disconnect the rear brakes and all the suspension connections. I think #17 is the circle clip that prevents the hub from being pulled with a puller. |
