Rear axle/differential noise

Hey guys,
I am about to make a purchase on a 2005 Mazda rx8. I have one issue with it before I buy it and was just wondering if any of you had advice as to what may be wrong with it?
I heard a low rumble coming from the backend that got quieter as the car slowed down. I took it out of gear and coasted and heard the same sound. It does not sound like tires or brakes.
Any advice?! I really want to buy this, but am hesitant because of this noise. If it is a problem and needs to be fixed, any idea how much it will cost? Thanks alot!

Best case scenario is choppy tires. If still wearing the original Bridgestone rubber that came from the factory - they are crap. So-so performance and they wear out crazy fast. Otherwise, might be more like a bad bearing. Could be brakes if a caliper is stuck but that doesn't usually sound like a rumble and you can check with your hand for excess heat build up if the brake shoe is dragging.

Thanks alot. I'm pretty sure we are going to buy it. I really hope it's not a big issue. We will most likely buy it and take it to our mechanic to check it out. Even if it is a issue, i'm sure it won't cost alot to fix.

Sounds like the spider gears going out mine was making the same noise but come to find out it was the pinion bearing
