RB oil adapter with OEM filter issues?
 

Guys,

Anybody has trouble with the Mazda oil filter(B6Y1 14 302 9A) not being able to be screwed all the way onto the RB oil adapter plate?

I had been using another brand of filter since I put the plate in as I was out of Mazda filters, changed the filter today, tightened as I normally would, started car and huge oil leak and 0 PSI. :SHOCKED: Say...what's that gurgling sound! :anger: :anger: :anger:

Needless to say, turned car off immediately but not before dumping at least two-three qts on the garage floor! :crying: You can imagine the cuss words!

For now, I went back to the other brand of filter and all is good. I don't really see any issue with the O-ring on the Mazda filter, and it sure seems like the depth past the threads on the inside of the filter would be okay, but it just seems like it's not allowing it to tighten all the way, kinda like the threaded RB oil adapter bolt(if you will) is just a little bit too long for the Mazda filter and it's hitting the inside top of the filter.

Anybody else seen this? :scratchhe

I know the 09' filters do not fit right on the RB adapter with modifying the brake line brackets on the firewall but a stock series 1 filter should work fine. I am sure this is a dumb question but is there anyway the old oil ring is stuck to the adapter plate? Does it seem to screw down all the way and sit flush?

I have the Prosport adapter and the 09 filters fit without issue and I have never had a problem with it.

Used to date a real estate gal and she gave me an oriental rug out of one of the models, so I had that under the car cause I wasn't gonna put that in my house. The rug didn't stop it in time before it ran off the end of the rug, down the 3 feet left in the garage, and about 3 feet down the driveway! Just fucking shoot me!

9krpmrx8 - Done hundreds of oil filter changes, and honestly never even had one leak. Nope, no remnants of old ring and I wiped the adapter off very carefully before even using the Mazda filter. It just seems to bottom out(if you will) and I couldn't see how much clearance was actually left. I've put hundreds of oil filters on hand tight(but, tight...I strong like Ox) ya know? I felt like what I was sure was contact of the O-ring with the adapter plate, then turned my normal amount after contact(involves some serious torque on hand and forearm).........but I think the bolt was merely hitting the inside top of the filter. Need more investigation, but I had a helluva mess to clean up. I'm thinking this distance miss is in very small millimeters. I think the O-ring made contact at some point during my tightening, but not until the very end.

Remember.........
Old filter brand was put back on same way and no issues at all.

Think I might go search the RB site or ask them if they have seen or been reports of any issues?

Damn, I would be pissed. Maybe they shipped you the wrong filter nut?

Maybe the two oil rings are different sizes, try putting the other brand oil filter o ring on your Mazda OEM filter and see if it works?

Nah, it's not tightening down all the way.

The two rings on the two filters are slightly different in shape/style and maybe in thickness as well, but I really do think the RB plate hold down bolt length is the issue.
I bought four Mazda filters at the same time, so I will inspect the others tomorrow and see if I can spot a difference? The part number is correct though. I will tell you this, when I had the issue and took off the Mazda filter, I did put the two of them side by side upside down and the other brand is every so slightly taller............that's what got me to thinking about what might be keeping it from bottoming out(so to speak) or sealing good.

I use Royal Purple filters... :/ wish I could help...

Oh, I got it solved with the old brand filter(I had a Fram of all things.....I know, I know..........but it was on sale with the oil last time when I did the original RB oil adapter install and no issues) and it works fine now. Just the Mazda one for some un-godly reason.
As soon as I put another Fram on(cause I had one left) it was fine once again. ??????? I just wanted to put the Mazda one on there as I just had four shipped to me with some other stuff.
Well, this is probably gonna have to wait for another 3k miles before I try it again. And.......a lot more carefully!!!!!!!

I find it ironic that everything is going good with Fram... But best of luck to you

btw my car stalled and isnt working anymore. I didnt update my thread yet but I had to get it towed to my house so I could look at it. Hopefully I can call a friend or two and see if we can get it figured out

All I meant was that the Fram doesn't leak and has no issues sealing. I normally DO NOT use them. :)

In five years it's only had the last one be a Fram, and now this one.....cause I can't get the OEM one to work.

I have used both Greddy and Anniversary Japan sandwich never had your problem, tried it with Mazda OEM, Mobil1 108 and 110, K&N 1108 and 1110. Its just that Greddy's double o-ring has a slight leak, never bother to try to fix it and bought Anniversary Japan, never had a problem been on car for 2-3 yrs not a single leak. I will use the Greddy Sandwich on my FC later. its probably just slight alignment issue.

Not sure how you are going to define "slight alignment issue", but I'll research when more time. Right now, I'm just concentrating on getting all the oil wiped off, so I can tell if my oil pressure sensor connection is good.

Remember, I've had the plate in there for at least three months or so, and was monitoring oil temp only. This past weekend I took out the plug in the oil pressure hole to install my new oil pressure sensor........well........one thing lead to another and I wanted to slight rotate the plate for better access, so to do that, the old filter(Fram) came off, I loosened the plate bolt ever so slightly so I could just rotate the plate ever so carefully(didn't want to deal with the O-ring between the plate and filler neck), locked it back down and decided to put the Mazda filter on. That's when it all went to hell.

I know you might be thinking it may have been leaking between the plate and filler neck since I rotated it, but it was in fact the Mazda filter to plate interface. Spun the Mazda filter off, put on the one Fram I had left and no leaks what-so-ever. Drove to work today without incident, monitoring everything very, very carefully both two and from. Jacked up car when I got home and checked it all out and all seems good. Actually, I had stuff a paper towel or two in around(but underneath) the RB plate so I could see if any weeping from anywhere and there wasn't.

dunno how you have this issue maz, as i run the RB sandwich AND i have no leaks when the oem filter goes on...

you may really want to make sure the bolt is properly tightened down on the sandwich plate... if a slightly more than snug turn is an issue to you, then i would suggest taking the bolt off to a light sandpaper for some clearance.

^.......thought about that. Maybe even take it to the grinder, but I think I will wait until I have more time here in the near future and try it again very carefully.

Bolt on plate is tightened properly....and then just a wee bit more.

It would actually be interesting if I was to put a wrench on the oil filter and keep tightening until I see the top of the filter pop up.......but don't really want to do that. I also look inside the Mazda filter and at the top there is this little round raised lip. I wonder if the bolt is just hitting that lip?

Anyway, I'll figure it out.................when time.

damn, that's really weird. I've been using the RB adapter and nothing but OEM filters for quite some time now.

even with good intentions not everything in this world comes out right.

Change the oil again today, no issues with Mazda filter this time. Pressure is fine and no leaks or weeps.

That's really strange.........must have been that one filter???????????? :Wconfused
