problems with 8

i have read that some people are trading in their 8's. i want to know if they have had the same problems i have had. i have had my rx-8 for a year and a half and had to replace the driver seat, ash tray, glove compartment, console, passenger airbag, driver airbag, both sun visors, and have to take it in soon for one of the airconditioning knobs. the one that turns it from cold to hot broke the other day. i have even had to take it in for flooding. as many problems as i have had with it i still love it and would never trade it in. i just want to know what other problems other people have had with their 8's.

Mugatu 04-29-2005 06:17 AM

you are definitely the first to replace the driver seat, ash tray, glove conpartment, console, airbags, sunvisors, etc. either you have an extreme lemon, you are unbelievably hard on your cars, or you are full of sh!t.

grapes 04-29-2005 07:17 AM

That's to bad- some of those are common problem areas. Do you have leather seats?

Elara 04-29-2005 07:18 AM

Were these aftermarket seats or stock seats. And what were the problems with the other thigns you mentioned? I

After you totaled your car, why didn't they just give you a new one? :)

joseight 04-29-2005 07:41 AM

That's what I was thinking

fullsmoke 04-29-2005 11:30 AM

I traded mine in because I couldn't find the GO button.

I've had to replace the front brake pads, a plastic sliding clip in the console track, and both rear taillights.

Brake pads: squeeking
Clip: broke off
Taillights: condensation, but I think it was related to an accident I was in

DukeGG1 04-29-2005 12:16 PM

Me, too. Brake pads, console clip. That's it.

MassiveAttack 04-29-2005 01:46 PM

AIR BAGS?!?!?!?!?!?!

You can't seriously be saying you had to change the air bags under warranty...

Ok I had to laugh at this one... definitely not safe for work when I started laughing aloud. The last part got me.

Red Devil 04-29-2005 02:00 PM

I'm with everyone else, we need a play by play of how all this went wrong with one car.

Elara 04-29-2005 04:13 PM

Hrm..all these problems and you're looking at putting a TURBO in it?

rotten42 04-29-2005 04:30 PM

only one minor problem - engine replacement...other than that its been fine. ;)

do you have fingers like Freddy Krueger?

MI_FamilyMan 04-29-2005 05:29 PM

That seems like an unusual amount of things gone wrong. Hopefully the poster will be able to respond and explain what his failure modes were. I haven't had any issues with my 8 thus far, except for the left hand rear quarter window frame that was chipped when I did my personal pre-delivery walk around. They ended up having to replace the entire window. Can't even tell they had to mess with it now.
I've been real happy with the car. The biggest problem I've had with the car is finding enough good opportunities and good roads to drive the car (I do live in Michigan after all).

Wiping brake dust off my wheels and soot off my tailpipes gets a little tiring too... :)

MaHogoff 04-29-2005 05:57 PM

22k miles, nothing ever wrong. Read this: Not. One. Thing. -That's a pretty incredible statement for any car. The 8 is best car on the planet.

This is all perfectly normal wear and tear for the break in of the car. You have nothing to worry about.

bjlrx8 04-29-2005 06:30 PM

first off i don't treat my car rough. i had to replace the seat because a spring was tearing through when i bought it and the airbags they told me there was a recall on them. the console clip broke as did alot of other peoples. the visors just split in half and i never use them. the glove box and ashtray, the mazda dealership told me a clip inside of those broke also which happened when my car was at the dealership getting fixed. i think it was the dealships fault they broke. even when i picked up my car from being fixed they had scratched a couple of panels and left dirt and mud all over the interior.

bjlrx8 04-29-2005 06:33 PM

these are just interior problems. i havent had any problems with the engine. and yes i do want to put a turbo in my car. I have talked to the dealerships and they said that the interior was made pretty cheap and i have to agree.

still not sure how you needed BOTH airbags replaced.

If we could convince Microsoft that trolls are a threat to users worldwide, do you think they could get the FCC to mandate mice that would electrocute any user that posts trollish material to a forum? I think that'd be the final nail in the coffin for all of this Linux #%$^.

Not trying to start an argument, but apparently you've never seen the interior of a 350-Z. Comparing the RX-8 to it is like comparing diamonds to mud.

Vip_C 04-30-2005 02:33 AM

No major problems as yet although the armrest does sway a little from left to right, and there is a bit of squeeling when i brake (sounds like it's coming from the back). I'll take it back when i can be bothered.

The dealer told me that the reason there are a lot of used 8's with low mileage and in mint condition is because people don't think fuel consumption is as high as figures state. Apparently, the think I'll not drive it as hard and get more mpg. How wrong were they.
They bring them back after topping up petrol every week for so many months.

TR1GGERx1 04-30-2005 02:37 AM

my console clip broke as well. and my defrost button cracked. i need to get that in for warrenty replacement

FS

bjlrx8 04-30-2005 07:45 AM

no it was not used.whining??? i was just telling people what has broke to see if mine is the only one or not.

PaulieWalnuts 04-30-2005 07:56 AM

Was the car in a serious accident or was the "totalled" thing a joke? Maybe that had something to do with it.

That's a lot of problems. Something's not quite right here.

You're referring to the airbag wiring harness recall which affected some earlier built cars. I wouldn't exactly classify this as something that went wrong with your car - it was replaced by the dealer at no cost because a design issue was discovered. Welcome to being an early adopter to a new car model.

alleycatinheaven 04-30-2005 10:02 PM

this is BS

I'm sure this is true in some cases. But what I can't understand is people spending about $7000 per year in total true cost of ownership of their car, and then complaining when gas costs them maybe $25-$35 per month more than they expected. You also see the same thing on the news all the time in regard to other cars besides the RX-8 because of the high gas prices. Criminy, you've been paying $7000 per year and now $7300 is going to break you?

The former RX-8 owners you refer to were willing to take maybe a $8000-$10,000 loss on what they paid for the car because of that ? That would be financial folly.

i am replacing the front bumper, side areos, rear bumper, wheels, and disc, i end up going all aftermarket.........~_~ oh i miss one, the hood, too.

automaton 05-16-2005 10:46 PM

I have a a place on the driver side seat (right hand thigh bolster") where the padding is too thin or something, it's pretty uncomfortable for anything longer than 1/2 an hour. That's the only real "problem" I've had with my car that sounds anything like what you've mentioned. It may merit some looking into on my part.

qwkphkr 05-17-2005 10:18 PM

Didn't Mazda offer to buy back cars when the horsepower-gate broke? Wouldn't that account for quite a few LOW mileage 2004's on dealer lots at low prices? I can't see that many people dumping a car that they've only had long enough to realize the initial devaluation.

Dragonrider 06-13-2005 08:16 PM

Did your car just fall apart or did it get help?

I have had mine since November 2003. I have put some mods in the car, ie exhaust, racing clutch (earlier than intended due to blowing up the stock clutch on the race track) piggy back ecu and after market front wing, side skirts, hood and rear bumper.

The interior looks as good as the day I picked up the car side from the dirt that sneaks in between cleanings.

So if I compare may experience with the car to what you are describing, either you are in fact a bull in the china closet or you got a little to friendly with another car on the road.

Unless you had an accident, why would you replace the air bags?
