Power Steering Light

My power steering light is on 95% of the time. (Steering wheel with a exclamation point). The steering itself works fine, but I am trying to sell the car and want to get this fixed.

Is there anything I can do myself before I take it to the dealer which I am sure will be expensive?

Thanks

1. you could have done a search and found a couple different threads that address all the fixes for this issue.
But dont worry, it's easily remedied. Here's all you need to do

  • click search
  • click on advanced search
  • under keywords, type in "power steering"
  • click on the drop down and change it to search thread titles only.

you'll see a thread there with over 11,000 views and a 150+ replies. It'll tell you just about everything you need to know on how to address this problem.
It's where I went when my power steering failed.

I know you are being sarcastic but thanks anyway. I searched but didn't change to search thread titles only and found nothing helpful.

Although it's worth noting you could have been more helpful and gave me a direct link instead.

^...............why should he have given you a direct link? You know he has to actually do it to go and grab the link, so why don't you just do it. Jeez!

Anyway, did you clean the connectors?
Have any luck?

The ol' coolant overflow dripping on the power steering harness/connector.

Jedi54 is justifiably irritated by the new owners/members here not bothering to search, or not searching very well. After seven years most everything has already been very well covered. "The truth is out there."

My response to you was not intended to be sarcastic in any way, it was a sincere response and one that I felt was most fitting.

I'm sorry you feel that I should have just given you the answer outright but hopefully you realize that teaching someone HOW to find an answer is far more empowering then simply giving you the answer.
I also noticed you mention that you didn't use the 'search thread title only' drop down so if anything, you've learned something valuable now that will assist you with further searches concerning this car or any other car you purchase after selling your RX-8.

Good luck with the PS issue, there are a few different 'fixes' out there and I'm certain you'll find one that works well for you.

I have been around different forums enough to know to search, and to also know that most people will say "search for it stupid" without actually searching themselves to verify that it exist or hasn't been buried.

Jedi54 clearly did search himself and realized a normal search wouldn't do since he found it by a custom search.

Since this thread will probably be found in a generic search the next time someone has this issue before the thread in question, it would have been helpful to more then just me to include the link.

For those that don't know, the power steering connectors are located directly under the coolant reservoir house and get wet/corroded.

To get to them you need to remove the air filter box. If you have not done it before here is quick video since I couldn't figure it out right away. I took the hose off too before I realized this but i think it gave me a little more room to work anyway.

Then there are 4 screws to remove the bracket the holds the air box in place. After you lift that up you will see the connectors in question.

I just cleaned mine with contact cleaner plugged them back in and now it's good.

You are thoroughly redeemed kanjas. ;)

It is most often/likely the connectors. Clean, dry and reconnect and you should be fine.

Many of us have extended the coolant overflow line just to be on the safe side.

FYI.......don't use the normal search.
Always use the advanced search, it works a whole lot better!
