Not a release bearing because the sound goes away after you push the clutch pedal.
When at idle you are hearing the idle gear and its common with our cars (search gear rollover).
The rattling in 3rd might be something different.

a bad release bearing at idle makes noise until you push the clutch in.

year, mileage? i think the noise and rattle may be unrelated. unless you hear both together always at the same time.

when you heard the rattle in 3rd what rpm range were you in? certain load %'s cause loose shields or other items to rattle, generally right where it goes from low to mid load ranges. things with loose bolts will rattle, pushing the clutch can get them to stop rattle cause you're killing off the load.

as for what the noise is, most likely gear rollover, but if it's used or was sitting on the lot for a little bit it may just be the throwout bearing not used to moving and "breaking in" sort of.

again thats assuming the noise and rattle are unrelated.

if they are connected i'm not positive on what it could be unless i heard it, sorry.

its a common rx8 noise, its since the transmission is so close to the driver, you hear more sounds than you would with a different car.

But a release bearing isn't used until the clutch is pressed in.
So this statement makes no sense.
You press on the clutch pedal, release fork pushes the release bearing (throw-out bearing) on the middle of the diaphragm spring, and so on.....
So a bad bearing would be MORE noticeable during motion (when you press the clutch pedal).

Exactly... that is gear rollover

Yea wow, slipped up there a bit, not sure what made me think backwards lol, happens to us all once in a while i guess.

disregard my info about the throwout bearing.

107k on it I'm leaning towards something loose, or simply the car sitting on the lot too long, but of course without hearing the noise I wouldn't completely disregard gear rollover, lots of people when they first buy the car bring it back to the dealer because of the gear noise only to be told it's normal.

if you randomly have the chance/equipment try recording it, if it is gear rollover we'll at least have a good sample to show the future users who may have the same noise but arent sure. if it's not then we'll be able to narrow it down a bit hopefully.

No problem... happens to all of us. ;)

There are actually quite a few different sounds that tend to emanate from the RX-8's transmission and/or clutch.

1) We have the typical "roll-over" noise.
2) We also have a "chirping" sound that comes from either the release bearing tapping on the pressure plate while the engine idles, or,
3) This noise could also be the slave cylinder alignment pin that goes through the release fork squeaking.
4) Then we have the whining sound that is amplified when the Axial Flow Short Shifter is used as it doesn't dampen noise like the spongy factory shifter does.

What other noises have I forgotten?
