Plug problems

Whats up guys I need some help. My car had to sit for about 6 days without getting started and I came back and it wouldnt start. So I got it towed to the dealership and they say it is some kind of plugs that got carbon dust on them and all 4 have to be replaced. Now I don't know alot about this car I just bought it, but he says each plug is $162 a piece, I wouldn't think it would be that much cause normally you cane buy a spark plug for about $18 but what do I know. So if anyone could tell me how and where and for how cheap I can buy these somewhere else, he gave me a p/n N3Y3-18-S30A-9U. Please help me they are trying to rape me with the price.

Thanks

nycgps 02-03-2009 01:29 PM

rofl ?

162 a piece ?

Pull your car out and push start it yourself.

then get some plugs from Mazmart or CRH for 80 bux all four shipped.

or just go sparkplugs.com, probably 85 bux all shipped.

He is trying to rape you hard indeed. There are 2 parts number for the 2 different spark plugs we have. Maybe you just got him wrong and he meant 162$ for the set, installed.
You could try to check up the vendors in here and see what they charge for a set of 4 plugs. They should cost less than 100$ a set. Are you sure, at this point, that it was the problem?

Does your dealership also sell condoms cus I feel like you're about to take it in the ass.

That's outrageous for plug wires. Talk to CRH about some plug wires (send him a PM), check www.finishlineperformance.com , or get some from www.racingbeat.com
CRH's are probably your best bet.

kah6987 02-03-2009 02:31 PM

yea he said he was gonna charge a total of $600 to fix it all and I asked him if I brought him the plugs how much it would be for labor and he said $250 he said that the thing is after he puts the plugs in he has to clean off the carbon dust on the inside and out of the engine

nycgps 02-03-2009 02:32 PM

tell him to kiss my ass.

they have access to a lift and it takes no longer than 1/2 hour to do all 4 plugs.

plus u dont need no "clean off carbon dust" bullshit.

Where do u live? if u close by NYC I have 1/2 can of the solution left I do it to u for free (buy me lunch or something)

sheessh

kah6987 02-03-2009 02:47 PM

he said it got flooded and has no compression and he has to turn the engine over to get all excess lub. out of it then put in fresh plugs then inject lub back in then rev it to get all the carbon out of it then clean all the carbon off the ports, does this sound like a typical problem?

kah6987 02-03-2009 02:48 PM

and no I live in Kentucky but thanks man

Socket7 02-03-2009 03:00 PM

Engine flooding is not uncommon, and the usual fix is to do what the dealer is describing, but he is charging you way, way to much money for something you could do yourself.

Might want to get him to commit to a labor price, and how many hours he think it will take. Then ask him to justify all the extra money he's charging you when you bust out the prices you can get all these parts for from this site. You gotta humiliate people like this to keep them honest.

Call this guy on his bullshit, but do it politely. No need for a "fuck you, scumbag", a "You know the price you quoted me to fix the car doesn't match up with the costs of the parts + the cost of your labor, and I've found that you're charging double the going rate for these parts too." is more then enough to ruin the guys day.

kah6987 02-03-2009 03:12 PM

is $260 to much for a labor price

Where in KY? Those prices are retarded. What dealership did you go to? If you're in the 'Ville, PM me and I can help 'ya take care of this for a helluva' lot less than $600!!

(I can't remember where you said you are from the heater control thread and PMs, but I think it was south of here a bit.)

I live in Danville which is about 2 hours but he said $260 for labor and I can get plugs for $124 so roughly $400 if I buy the plugs seperate, does this sound reasonable or still over priced?

RX8-Frontier 02-03-2009 04:04 PM

It's still overpriced. At most you should be looking at around $50 to $100 for labor to change the spark plugs. It's only about a 30 min. job, but a lot of shops will charge 1 hour, min..

Watch Ebay auctions, too. You can get better prices if you keep an eye out. Just make sure you get the REC-7L and REC-9T plugs and you're golden

Watch out, though, 'cause a lot of auctions sell the platinum RX-7 plugs as "RX-8" plugs...yeah, they'll work, but they're only worth about $7 apeice, so don't get scammed and buy them for $15 apiece thinking you got a good deal!! Also, the trailing (T) plug needs a shim if you're using RX-7 plugs, so keep that in mind, or just buy the Iridium plugs made just for the RX-8 and be done with it.

I bought my plugs for roughly $50 on Ebay...

I didn't know there was a Mazda dealer in Danville. That place must've changed a lot since I lived near there (Perryville, but I went to Danville High School my sophomore year).

Edit: I can't make a commitment to come down there and help 'ya, but, if you decide to do this yourself, shoot me a PM and I'll give 'ya my cell phone number to help walk you through it if you hit any snags. It really is pretty simple, and all 4 plugs are pretty easy to get to if you've got a few differen't length socket extensions and a swivel/u-joint.

Hopefully if you decide to go back, the dealer stocks Kentucky Jelly

joemeekfreak 02-03-2009 08:25 PM

Seriously, plugs do only take maybe 30-40 mins tops, you will need a couple tools though...just take off the front left wheel and jack it up...it's very easy. Plugs only cost $20/piece (not that that is cheap, cause its not, but its a lot cheaper then what they're trying to charge you)....and when you order them, make sure you get 2 leading, and 2 trailing.

nycgps 02-04-2009 12:23 AM

to change the plug, I just need 2 jack stand, a jack, extension bar, ratchet, and the right plug socket. Dont need to take the wheels off. 30 minute tops.

err no, plugs dont cost 124 each, thats even more than MSRP~~~ screw that.

which one sound bettetr ?

$124 each x 4 plugs ?

or

$80 for all 4 plugs ?

tsxmidship 02-04-2009 11:19 PM

if i was a total idiot at working on cars, but had common sense about money then....

4x spark plugs at $20 each---------$80
1 hour labor at $50/hour-----------$50
total---------------$130

don't pay more than $130 for everything if you want them to do it.

nycgps 02-04-2009 11:46 PM

Most dealership charge at least 90 bux per hour. in NYC some charged 110 per hour

so if u want to pay 50, they will just tell you to go somewhere else. they probably make more on changing oil than that. (cuz each oil change cost like 30 bux at dealership, and they give u shit motorcraft oil which cost like a buck something each quart), and it takes probably 15 minutes to do one.
