plug and coil replacement cost

took my 8 to my buddies father-in-law's shop for a loss off power. he wants to charge me $700 to change plugs and ignition coils. its a 2004 so it falls out of warranty, but is this price outta control, normal, or am i better off takin it to the dealership?

dozer 11-11-2009 03:59 PM

hes chargin you the dealership price...

coils go for around 125$ shipped

plugs (4) go for about 80$ shipped

plugs - 25minutes max to do, about a 3 on n00bie scale from 1-10 to do

coils- 15 minutes max (depending on whether you have the stock airbox or not)

heres a DIY for the coils

search "diy spark plugs" to find the spark plug diy

I've never changed my coils while I had a stock air box, but I guess you could do it in about an hour - less if you've done it before. Then the spark plugs are pretty easy - maybe 30 minutes. So I guess you could do it for $205 if you have a jack, a driveway, and 2 hours to kill (some basic tools).

^yeah taking out the airbox is harder than replacing the coils

mryoshi 11-11-2009 04:53 PM

I just did mine today. I have stock airbox.
It took me about 90 min (although I wasnt really trying to go fast). I changed coils, plugs, wires and K&N air filter.
It is also very easy to clean your MAF sensor while your at it.
I bought the stuff at Mazdatrix, about 400 in parts total with tax.
I paid little premium so I could have it today. can save a few bucks by having shipped.
Made HUGE difference in how mine ran.

took me about an hour in the pouring down rain to do coils and plugs...and yes the hardest thing is taking that damn airbox out but I've done it so much that I'm a pro at it by now haha

dozer 11-11-2009 04:59 PM

^its easier with an aftermarket intake, i have the k&n and i didnt have to remove it, i could reach right in

Dino the Greek 11-11-2009 05:31 PM

holy crap thanx for the response sounds like this guy is tryin to take my head off. i told him to switch out the plugs since he had the airfilter out think i m gonna do the coils solo + i got a buddy that lives down the street thats ase certified so if i get in a jam i m sure he ll gimmie a hand. took it too him to check it out but since i know the issue now i should be good. thanx again! oh 1 other thing while i m doin this would u advise puttin new wires in also?

Generally, if you make friends with a few car guys in an area, the cost of most maintenance items is about a 6 of beer per man required.

dozer 11-11-2009 05:34 PM

in order to get to the plugs you gotta remove the front drivers side wheel

Thanks, Dozer, very much. The instructions could not be any simpler or more direct than you made them.

RE.swenka.RX8 11-19-2009 09:24 AM

I am about to change my plugs, wires and coild also and am wondering if it matters which brand of wire and coils I use. Right now I am looking at the mazdatrix and the NGK wires. The NGK are the cheapest I have found, $23.87. It's an OEM set so I am just wondering if that will work well with the NGK Laser Irirdium spark plugs. You can check them out here:

Thanks.

dozer 11-19-2009 10:09 AM

^that should be fine

bhop 11-19-2009 05:40 PM

I was about to change wires/plugs/coils as well. I think Racing Beat wires are pretty good but IDK many others.
