Passenger side mirror malfunction
 

So I'm heading out to lunch with my wife, parallel park the car and fold the mirrors. The passenger side mirror then starts making clicking noises, even though it's folded. It sounds like the motor mechanism isn't stopping, causing the clicking noises as it keeps trying to fold (or unfold) the mirror. Tried unfolding and folding several times and regardless what mode the clicking noises persist. It only stops when I switch off the car.

After having lunch, the mirror is still clicking, but now it won't fold or unfold automatically. It has to be coaxed to fold or unfold.

Has anyone come across this? Thanks for all feedback.

First time I've heard of this.
When you switch over to the driver's side mirror, does the problem carry over to that mirror?
If so, I would suspect the switch.
If not, maybe start at the wire harness just before the mirror.

Nope, just passenger side mirror.

Is it still under warranty? If so, just bring it into the stealership; it's free. :)

It says he has an 03', so he should be out of warranty.
There isn't much between the switch and the mirrors to troubleshoot.
I would start with the harness in the door panel and ensure that it didn't come loose or is causing a short (might be a long shot, but its worth a look).
This might suck a little, but you could also try swapping the mirrors to see if the issue stays on the same side or carries over to the other.
It if carries over, then you know that the mirror itself is bad.
If it stays, then I would probably start checking continuity at the switch.

Took off the mirror housing, everything looked fine. Took off the tweeter and same thing. I didn't have time to take off the door panel as it was getting dark today. How far down the door is the harness? In the meantime is there any way I can just cut the power so it stops making that clicking noise? I checked the fuse box but no such luck.

Only way to cut power to that mirror is to disconnect the wire harness.
The harness is actually not too far from the mirror (inside the door panel). You can simply follow the wire from the mirror to the harness.
Reference the attachment for an idea on where its located.

I just reviewed a schematic...
There is a fuse going to the mirrors and rear defroster, labeled M. Def.
Its a 10A fuse in the fuse panel (inside the car).
Now, the schematic says its in location 7, but the owner's manual states its in location 9. But its the only 10A fuse in there (besides the spare).
So as long as you don't need to use the other mirror or your rear defroster, you can pull this fuse.

I'm having the same problem, It was working fine yesterday and now the passenger mirror won't fold But i'm not really hearing a ticking sound :S

Jon316G, thanks for all the help. You won't believe this but the 10A fuse for the 'M.Def' isn't there. The spare is available, but the fuse isn't. I checked the fuse box in the engine bay and there's nothing there too, although I do have a rear mirror defroster.

I guess I'm just going to have a look at wiring and the harness. Do you have the front door trim removal instructions? I'm having trouble with that. Thanks.

I took a more in depth look at the electrical diagram in the shop manual. The "Table of Contents" section (page 5) listed that fuse going to the power mirrors and mirror heaters, but when you go to the section for power mirrors, it doesn't list that fuse before the ACC relay! I had to go to the section for the rear defroster and it showed that fuse going to the heated mirrors.
So it looks like that fuse is only for the heated mirrors, not the motor control. That would explain why you don't have one installed... you probably don't have heated mirrors.

I'm sure there is a document for removing the door trim, but I have to leave for a family dinner. I'll post one up when I get back (unless someone else beats me to it).

Its also not a bad idea to save each section on your computer (that way you don't need to wait for it to load the pages which can be between 2MB and 14MB).

I finally had a bit of time to take the door panel off and check the harness. Everything seems to be in order, it wasn't loose or anything. I think the motors gone bad. I didn't try to switch the mirrors over, it's a bit of a pain to remove the door panels and trim. I've been meaning to get aftermarket mirrors anyway so I guess this is a good time to get them (great excuse to give to the wife too!). In the meantime, I've just pulled the harness so it stops making those damn noises.

Hi, Mr Rotor Kreuzer, I have the same problem with the folding mirror issue. The motor inside keep working, but mine is at the driver side.
May I ask what is the solution for this issue?? Can u give me some tips?
