P2096 (cel)
CEL... P2096
Target AF feedback system too lean- right bank. Probable cause 1- Large vacuum leak 2- Fuel system malfunction 3- MAF sensor faulty 4- Ignition system malfunction Driving home and light came on. No noticeable problems. The car seems to be running fine. I put fuel cleaner in earlier today and still hasn't shut off. Anybody have any suggestions? |
sorry should have included info. '04 RX-8 with approx. 45,xxx miles on her. I've had the car for about 2 years now. Recently (the past year), I've had non-stop problems with the CEL it seems. It feels like every time I get it back from the dealership it will run great for a a few weeks but then boom, CEL. It's starting to get unbelievably annoying.

I've been dealing with the same P2096 CEL for a while now. I cleaned the MAF and the CEL went away for a couple weeks. It came back after a long highway trip yesterday but went away again. It has been frustrating trying to track down the cause. What's more annoying is that everything ran fine up until a month ago but now when the engine heats up, it wants to stall or has a hard time starting. Hope you don't wind up heading down that path.
To offer some advice on your issue...Did you do your 30k mile service? Cleaning the MAF is simple and may solve your problem. A couple other things to consider are coils and plugs. After researching my problem, I believe plugs are my next recourse. Hope that helps. |
Any resolution to this, I'm having the same CEL, and I changed my coils, plugs, wires and MAF already, no improvement.

i came across this problem too. i have a test pipe and i thought that was the cause but after reading this i may have to do more research.
has anyone had any updates on the fix? |

the 02 sensor in your mid pipe just measures heat ( I think) either way it doesn't control anything. The one prior to it in the exhaust manifold is a wide band 02 sensor that measures a/f values
If you are indeed running lean and your 02 sensor is fine then you have a fuel problem. Fuel pump, Evap canister, Injectors. Etc etc. I would have them look there. lean means to much air not enough fuel. the 02 sensor picks up on whats coming out of the exhaust before the cat so it knows whats going on. I suppose you could have that code come up if the pre cat and post cat 02 sensors are reading the same thing... So yes for those of you with stock systems and your getting a lean code id check anything fuel, after ignition and intake. |

Sorry it took so long to reply guys. Anyways, I took it to the dealer to find out what the problem was and all that they could find was a crack in the oil pan. They fixed that and the P2096 code hasn't shown up again.
iRX- yeah man I just took it in and had the service done about a month ago and it's been running great ever since. |

Had the same code p2096 last night... Im on the second day of a 4 day drive.... Its. 05 m/t with 84k origional engine.... Since it said too lean... I was thinking fuel so i dumped about a tripple dose of lucas oil fuel injector cleaner into the tank... About half tank after the cel disapeared after shuting it off at a reststop.... Hasnt come on today going to keep using the injector cleaner for a few tanks... Will let you know ifit comes back or not

OK sorry to bring up a 3 year old thread but its back. Been back off and on for the last year.
Ive tried a new maf, plugs, coils, wires, fuel pump, seafoam, checked for intake leaks. Only comes on while crusing at a steady speed, almost aways with cruise control. never happens while going about town, only crusing down some highway. I have no idea now... except maybe O2 sensor because on my AP the AFR will randomly freeze at 14.7 for about 10-15 seconds when im looking at it or while dataloging. The only mod on the car is a catback and stage 1 AP map. Im deployed so i have a little time to read and try to find some help with this, so any help will be awesome thanks, |
also would this be caused by the front or rear O2 sensor?

yes, a failed front O2 sensor does NOT always trigger a CEL, MOST of the time its stuck in RICH mode rather than LEAN. but it can happen.
just read the PID for O2 sensor, accel the engine and u should only see positive value, if any negative pops up, it has failed. and if ur o2 sensor is already 50-60K miles old, replace it. cost like 100 bux and around 45 mins of time. |

dont need to get Oem, it's bloody expensive, there are other brand o2 sensor that works just as fine, cost about 100 bux
