P0037, P0031, P2010?? help please!

The rear 02 sensor, which is P0037, I don't really care about..I have no cat and from all the cumulative reading i've done it doesn't have any affect on the operation of the car except the CEL part.

I had been running without a front 02 sensor for some time, as I couldn't afford one and couldn't find one. Well I picked one up used from a seller here just last week, and I installed it on Monday night.

Cleared the ECU for a good hour or so (while I installed the sensor) and fired her up when I was done. I inspected all the wires of this sensor and it was clean as a whistle, obviously used - but clean. Threads looked great. CEL comes on driving back to Richmond; I assume this is P0031.

For a while now i've had some power loss noticeably in the upper RPM range but it seems somewhat sporadic, ever since about a month after I bought it or so. For background information, the car has 75k on it, and the motor was replaced by mazda at about 46k miles. I bought it at 53. She ran beautifully with no CEL at the time; But I remember it coming on not but a few weeks after I bought the car. I never did check it out, because i've relocated, got a new job, and my first apartment, etc.

So both P0037 and P0031 say Bank 1 Sensor 1/2 heater circuit low.

The other code I have, P2010, i've scanned recently, and after clearing the ECU, it came back. This says Variable tumble control System (VTCS) - Solenoid valve circuit high input.

I've done my fair bit of reading and the 02 sensor one's seem to simply indicate failed sensors, but both of them??

And there isn't all that much info on P2010, except that it could be SSV, APV, or whatever else.

Okay well i'm on the fence about ordering a new front 02 as they arn't exactly cheap..What if I replace it again, and it's not the problem? How would I even check to see if the sensor actually has failed, vs some other problem?

If I had not lost the registration for the software for my own scanner then I could scan these myself; another scanner pulled up Intake Manifold runner 1 circuit high for the P2010. The VDI and SSV seem to be working under throttle as I had a mate rev it up to 7ish. I'd have to do more work to check the APV.

I replaced the front 02 with a new unit, that problem has been resolved. I guess I just got bad luck and the sensor I bought used was already bad..

Will continue when I find out more.

where did you get the sensor and how much did ya pay for it ?

203 bucks and it was a Bosch replacement.

Replacing the front sensor will likely save you $250 worth of gas in short order

No front O2 and the vehicle defaults to rich open loop mode...and that isn't good for fuel mileage

Or a number of other things!

Good thing i'm replacing those plugs soon..

Hope people don't mind me updating my own thread..just trying to document the path for anyone else in the future.

I havn't been able to pull the codes yet, but it's still got a CEL. I'm assuming from the 'Intake Manifold Runner' code and the rear 02. I know the ignition is way past due an update and i'll be replacing it with the BHR system. I've got my own scan tool at my house but I won't be there until the weekend.

But, car is still slow as balls. Though I don't seem to have any real compression issues ie no dipping idle (though somewhat rough), no slow start up hot or cold, have never had it stall, and the engine is relatively new (20-30k on the engine). I also premix with Idemitsu, 6oz/tank. I think I will do a BARO/vacuum test per the TSB this weekend anyways. At least that'll give me an idea if it's in the normal range and if a true compression test is warranted.

I have a feeling it's got something to do with the intake side of things, the VDI and SSV operate smooth as butter hand actuated as well as under throttle. I guess i'll troubleshoot the APV this weekend as well and take off the UIM and see how clean/dirty it is.

Running out of ideas truly. The slated install date for the turbo is about a month from now so I'm really trying to get this worked out. Another thing that wouldn't hurt is double check the screens are in the correct position on my intake.

I sprayed mine with some cleaner... good as new... well ... probably going to need a new one soon though...

Good info. The rear 02 isn't needed and i'm going to cover it up with the AP soon so i'm not too concerned. The front is quite a big deal though and that's up and running.

The 8 seems like it has most of it's power, but after taking some logs i'm leaning towards needing new ignition. It was already included the in the plan for boost and that is coming up in two weeks. So i'll take a few more logs after that.

I'm a newbie to this forum (based in UK) but found you when searching for information on a P0037 OBD error code

As I know very little about these sort of things, I have a very basic question: will I do any damage to the engine if I continue to drive with this error? I've got no other error codes showing (the OBD reader also showed P0037 as 'pending', whatever that means)
