OMP Leaking & Transmission Bearing : (
Ok, so I had my 8 get looked at by a good rotary specialist shop. They mentioned that there are two pressing problems:
1.) OMP (Oil Metering Pump) has small amount of leakage Price to fix: ~$1500  2.) Transmission Bearing is making some noise Price to fix: ~$1800 + More if I want clutch replaced, which I do  So what are some people's thoughts about getting the above fixed for a more reasonable price. I love my 8 to death and if this is what needs to be done in the future I'll save up but if I can get some pointers about bringing the cost down a tad a bit, I would be more grateful. Thanks! |
um.. 1500 for a leak in the OMP? did he at least reach around when he pounded that price into you? Did he say where it was leaking?
1800 for the bearing? Since you could fix both yourself.. or even higher Charles R Hill to fly out, fix both, and give you a happy ending for less... i'd suggest looking around for someone else to work on your car. |
Didn't know Charles was giving happy endings :D:

Both those prices are crazy high (without knowing full details on the issues).
For the OMP did he mentioned that it was crack/damaged? The leak could just be from a seal like the copper one for the banjo fittings. And if the transmission noise is the throw-out or pilot bearing, you can buy the part and install it yourself or take it to a transmission shop and they'll replace it for MUCH cheaper. I really question this "good rotary specialist shop" you speak of. |

Very good ratings and rotorheads swear by them. http://www.yelp.com/biz/p-r-motorsports-hayward I don't think they were talking about the throw-out bearing as in rebuilding the whole transmission so its some other bearing. As far the OMP goes, they want to replace the whole thing, from what I been told and 95% of the cost is from the part alone. -Chris |
Yeah... the OMP itself costs just over $1000 new, so $1500 with parts and labor isn't too far fetched.
I just wanted to make sure the actual unit failed and it wasn't just a gasket leak. |
when a shop tells me "leaking" i think gasket or seal. When a shop tells me "broken" i think new part. Just they way i've always been when listening to a mechanic.

If your in So. Calf.. take it to Reliable Rotary on Harbor in Santa Ana.
Also do a search... Add some grease and squeak goes away. I think this thread may have pictures. If not do a search. https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discussion-3/common-sense-vs-mazda-squeaky-tranny-172605/ |
Bump for info, my life is in your hands!

i have the same problems at 1800rpm too....have u found a solution ?
|
I'd also suggest taking it to Paul at Rotorsport in Santa Clara. He's a great guy and knows all about rotaries.

a lot of omps leak---its a small gasket thing, if it is broken and leaking--its the 1st one i have heard off.
Trans? Buy a low mileage 09 and have it installed---its better OD |

*Update* Its amazing how much one can learn in a couple of weeks, especially forum surfing for 8+ hours a day. Heh. Anyway, 1.) The OMP was looked at by many shops and as many as mentioned the best guess is a gasket issue. There is no solid conclusive evidence that its "failing." But its something to keep an eye on. 2.) The tranny does have worn bearing issues and 5th syncro might be out since downshifting from 6th @ 70+ MPH causes a grind. But there is still some life in the transmission before a overhaul. I might just transplant a new transmission as many have mentioned. I am having some fresh Redline MT-90 be thrown in there real soon to buy some time and for extra measures. Does any1 know what is a good source for 09 tranny? Mazmart maybe? -Chris |
