Oil Pressure Meter...Normal?

1 Attachment(s)
Hi, my rx8's oil pressure meter is slightly tilted over to the right side and I have no idea if that is normal or not. I dont remember if it was ever in the middle either. Here is a picture of it. Can anyone tell me if they have this or know anything of it? Thanks

dannobre 03-30-2010 06:26 PM

Normal..it's just an idiot light really...position has nothing to do with reality........:)

Mazurfer 03-30-2010 06:28 PM

Are you serious?
Don't you have a manual for your car?
I'll go ahead and answer your question, but you'll likely take a whole bunch of flak over this post!
Yes, it's normal right there. This gauge doesn't tell you how much oil you have(so you need to be checking it), all it really reads is that you have oil pressure. It basically has one of three positions. No oil, normal(where it is now), or way....way too much pressure!

Damn it Dannobre....ya beat me to it! Argh!

Actually, I've never seen on read np pressure or full on pressure. Both would be really, really bad!

Vyndictive 03-30-2010 06:32 PM

Yes... think of that gauge as a "yes or no" indicator.

1. If there is any oil pressure at all, it will look like it does all the time.

2. If there is zero oil pressure at all. . . it will read none. Which means your car has long since been ruined. **

**I can't confirm point 2 in person because I've never seen it... it may very well read "normal" even if there is no oil pressure... they say it shouldn't though.

Thanks a bunch guys. I really appreciate it. Now I'm relieved.

No problem, now go get your owners manual and put it on the nightstand, you'll be amazed at what information is in there.

:)

seams a bit high ;) lol

yeah oem gauges do nothing ... why bother have an inaccurate guage?

Mazurfer 03-30-2010 09:14 PM

Yeah......the just should have made it digital with the way they have it..........just display a 0 or 1 :dunno:

Or a visual indicator that looks like this:
Pressure = :D:
No pressure =

Mazurfer 03-30-2010 09:23 PM

"You're Fine"
"You're Dorked" <----- replace dorked with any other word you like! I didn't wanna cuss cause someones Momma might see this!

heyarnold69 03-30-2010 09:50 PM

I so want a gauge that has 3 faces ... last one with x s for eyes meaning your engine is dead lol

Jigger 03-31-2010 10:27 AM

Lol that would be nice. Much easier to tell.

laythor 03-31-2010 10:37 AM

i will never understand why mazda decided that an engine that actually burns oil didn't need an oil pressure gauge.

9krpmrx8 03-31-2010 10:38 AM

Hell even my Mom's NA Miata has a real oil pressure gauge.

Huey52 03-31-2010 10:43 AM

Yep, in a vehicle that is otherwise well thought out that one mystifies me as well. Thankfully I now have a Racing Beat gauge pod.

RB OP gauge only goes to 100 PSI though ;)

i love my RP gauge pod, i dislike the guages they use in their pre-made kit.

I do love my defi gauges.

Water temp, oil pressure, oil temp

My next big purchase will be DEFI gauges. I don't see the point of mechanical gauges, what a hassle.

Huey52 04-01-2010 07:16 AM

Electronic gauges are nice, but mechanical have their place. They're 'always on' which can be advantageous and they're easier to install. With a stainless steel line (vs. the cheap poly it came with) I'm not concerned with oil in the cockpit.

Either is better than the almost useless stock "binary" oil pressure gauge.

Huey52 04-01-2010 07:19 AM

Which is plenty for me. ;)
