Oil Leak
 

Brand new member here. I have a 2004 RX-8 with major oil pouring out only when it is running, Seems to be coming out right behind the starter. Any ideas?

Rear main seal. Or possibly the oil pressure sending unit is leaking and running down in that area too. Or also the oil filter neck.

Have you changed your oil lately? Did you just install a new oil filter?

In that particular area is the oil filter, oil pedestal/gasket, oil cooler return line in at oil filter mounting pedestal and oil pressure sensor. So your gong to have to get yourself a flashlight and look around in that area. And determine which one is leaking.
That or some real good pics. But if you could take a pic of a leak your gonna know where it's at and not need us.

I am also suffering from a oil leak but from somewhere in the front of the car...
It only seems to leak under high rpm use. I cleaned the motor up best I could at a car wash and drove it about 30-40 miles and put it on a lift to try and find the leak. The bulk of the oil appears to be coming from around the omp (already have a new gasket to put on). The only one I was able to eleminate from possible sources is the front main seal as it was clean and dry behind the pully. But I'm having a very hard time believing its the omp leaking because it's getting on my belts and throwing oil everywhere. Oil cooler lines appear ok, there was oil on them but it looks like it came from the belt. No oil on top of the engine.

If it is my omp leaking, how is it making it to the belts??

^ Could be a cracked or broken OMP line.
Check the area around the Alternator mount adjustment bracket. Behind it, where it bolts over the waterpump. Also under the main harness going past the thermostat. Look around in there for oil.
A can or two of brake clean will be a good friend to have.

^ I hadn't listed that one because last month (Oil leak was already present, but was not even bad enough to leave a spot on the ground) I had the UIM off while changing that stupid TB coolant hose and the top looked dirty, but omp oil lines looked fine, no oil except a little around where the filler neck would be. I did give the lines a quick glance over while looking but nothing more than that. Guess I better go rip the UIM off and be sure. Rats...

Well still can not find that leak... It keeps raining every damn day making it impossible for me to take the UIM off (I rent). I cleaned the engine bay again (better), and gave it a good run. Oil on the bottom of the omp, and it looked like oil on the front cover right above and to the left of the main pulley. No oil anywhere else.

Frustrated, with not being able to have enough rain free time to rip the UIM off I made a map and set the omp rates all to 60 and loaded it into the car... I figured if its a line leaking and its only leaking at high rpm... this would simulate that while idling.. I ran the car for about 15~20 minutes, blue smoke coming out of the rear pipe, but no new oil anywhere on the engine...

Sorry just aggravated cause I start my vacation tomorrow and Friday morning I'm suppose to be driving to Florida... Sucks..

Fixed the leak (I think), Changed the omp gasket, the lower omp bolt was not on very tight. Got that area cleaned up real good and went go give her a good run, still dry. :)

Turned out to be oil pressure sensor leaking. Cheap fix. Thanks for the help!

Did more digging, but still have nothing. I took the advise got some brake cleaner and went to town. Went go give it a good drive and I could smell the oil burning.. Took the alt off, completely dry behind it. Omp pump, completely covered...

Passenger side of engine is has a light film from top rear bolt of omp to the pan, including the front of the exhaust manifold. Everything rear of the exhaust manifold is dry. Oil is dripping off the lower bolt of the omp pump. there is also a little bit of oil on the omp line bolts coming off the pump. Lower radiator hose also has a little oil on it.

Front of engine - Front cover has a light film, starts passenger side right below the water pump pulley and goes at a descending angle towards the main front seal. Front seal area is still dry underneath, no pooling oil. But there is a light film on top of it making its way down.

Belt has so much oil on it I just went ahead and put the old one back on it.

Im struggling with a new oil leak.

Replaced gasgets/seals on OMP, Oil Pan, and Oil Fill neck.

The leak seems to be on top of the block towards the exhaust side, alot of oil coverage on exhaust manifold and burns bad. But theres trace amounts of oil on top of the block near the bell housing, from the passenger side to the oil filter neck. If it was indeed the oil filter neck leaking, or sensor, i would think the oil coverage would mainly be on that side of the engine. But its not.

I removed the upper intake manifold to get a better look at where the leak might be, but was incunclusive. There was puddles of oil sitting on top of the lower intake, oil coverage over entire top of the block. I traced the vacuum lines, found that there is 2 lines off of the oil fill neck, a upper and lower one. The lower on I capped off,- I found this line to be blown off twice before with oil inside the line. So the intake was sucking oil through the vacuum line connected to the lower portion of the oil fill neck. Capped off this line and removed the hose. The upper vacuum hose also went into the intake, I routed it to a catch can so that the blow by would not end up in the intake. Or the intake wouldnt suck oil through it like a straw. Terrible design in my opinion. The last vacuum hose ran from the intake to the Oil Injector block. I left this one in place.

Now a week or so after blocking/capping off the lower oil fill neck vacuum line, I still have a oil leak. But its more on top of the block near the exhaust side. Its getting on the exhaust manifold and burning, and leaving a puddles on the ground. Continuing to have to add oil. Getting expensive now.

My plan of as now, is to jack the car up, soak the entire engine bay down with degressor and power wash. Crawl underneath and see if I cant spot a leak.

Looking at diagrams and pictures, I cant seem to find a oil line that would near the lower intake/exhaust manifold. Except the last rear iron has a hose coming off of it, its hard to see it clearly, but it doesnt seem that the leak is coming from there.

There aren't any sensors related to oil on that area of the block (between oil filler neck, LIM/manifold, and passenger side of bellhousing).

The oil cooler lines exit/enter from the front and driver side of the keg.
The OMP is down low so it would be odd for it to be the source but the oil injectors are up high. That said, the OMP doesn't move much oil even at max so that seems unlikely.

The breather tube on the oil filler neck will only suck oil if you add oil while the engine is running. The crank case shouldn't be directly open to atmosphere so there should be no significant air flow through that tube beyond blowby (unless the filler cap is off or the o-rings on your dipstick are bad).

I'm trying to figure out what you're talking about with this second breather hose on the filler neck. There's only one there. There are three breather hoses that connect to the accordion tube between the MAF and the TB. One goes to the filler neck, another goes to the OMP injector block, and the third goes to a port on the LIM for the "Jet Air Fuel Mixing" system (see also). If that's the one you disconnected, you should probably reconnect it.

I’m new here so I hope this is the right spot to post this. Im having an oil leak. It only appears to be leaking when the car is running. Oil is pooling up on the front cross member underneath the transmission. I thought it was coming from underneath the upper intake manifold. I attached pictures. I found a picture online of a gasket circled red. Could it be that? It is a 2004 rx8. Any advice or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

That's one of the common leaking spot

but if your issues is "shit is dripping down from the bottom"

most of the time is the engine rear main seal.
2nd would be the oil pan itself.

I previously posted in another oil leak thread about this yet I’ve yet to get a reply so I’ll post here aswell. My rx8 leaks a ton of oil from the oil cooler line connection which comes just above the radiator. The hose did pop off on me one time, but I’ve put it back together 2 times already and it is still leaking. Does anybody know if I have to change an o ring on the line or get a new clip cause mine looks pretty stretched out?

The cooler lines themselves are known to corrode and leak in climates with salt/winter. Might be time for new lines?

Thanks for the reply, I am planning on replacing the hoses themselves later on with the Mishimoto ones but I don't think it's leaking from the corrosion. Ever since I swapped my motor in I can't seem to get it to stop leaking from the quick disconnect coupler(the one which connects the yellow and pink hose in the picture). I've tried reconnecting it two times yet it still seems kinda loose and leaks.

I found the oil leak coming out of a hole on the bottom of the bellhousing. It only appears to leak when I revv up the car. Does this mean that it is the rear main seal. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
