Occasional Engine Problem
 

Here is what happened. Driving during the summer one day it started cutting out and lost power. After it cooled a bit I could restart it and it ran fine unless I punched it then it would either hesitate or die. If it died, I would have to wait for it to cool off before I could start it. The only way I could get it to the dealer was to baby it.

They blew it out (forget the process name) and after driving away, it started to cut out again so I took it back and they did it again for free. Since then it has been OK. Had the plugs replaced at that time.

So this is my opinion. It only happens during the summer, when it is warm, and when I push it so I believe it could be my coils. Once it starts missing, it carbons up pretty quick (again my opinion) causing my problem.

It still pulls as hard as when I bought it new but now during the summer, I do not push it (what fun is that) for fear of the same thing happening. I have not had a problem for a couple of summers now. I bought it new in 06 and have 31K on it and probably happened around 22K.

Besides that the only problems I have had with the car was the rear differential gearing shelling out which was replaced under warranty at 20K and the overflow tank sensor going off under high revs (plenty of solution in the system and understand this is a common sensor problem).

So any opinions on if my problem could be the coils?

Fuel pump in my opinion.


Fuel pump is failing, and overheating till it shuts down. More power = more fuel, higher pump load. Letting it cool down lets it start working again.

Could be. It only happens on a hot day, 90+. No problems above that temp.

fuel pump or coils would be my guess.

both are easy enough to check, check fuel pressure after the problem arises and check for spark at both leading plugs when it will not start with a timing light.

Well, the last time it happened I just did not have a timing light on me :wink2: but I may replace the coils anyway since I have 31K and have read that they are worked pretty hard. Can't hurt. Then I will see if I have a problem next summer and go the fuel pump route if I do.
