O2 Sensor Questions
 

I'm having an issue with my 04. She's throwing a check engine light, and idling a bit rough (could be the cold weather) but I had a ODBII check done and they stated that the code indicated a Bank 2 Sensor 1 O2 sensor failure.


I've searched around the threads here but most of what I found while searching about the O2 sensors was tech/tuning and programming related.

So, if you don't mind my asking, and I apologize if these are simple questions I should already know the answers to, I would like to know the following.

1) How many banks of O2 sensors are present on my RX8, and where are they located, and how many sensors are in each bank?

2) On a scale of "Annoying - Slight gas mileage issue" to "Rotarpocolypse" how serious is this issue? Because it always seems like I have to climb under the car when it is freezing out.

3) Is this something that a shadetree mechanic can handle, or would you recommend dealer action for it?

Bank 2 Sensor 1 ? what exactly is the code ? it sounds like Rear O2 Sensor cuz Front should be Bank 1

if it's really Rear , it doesn't effect anything it's just there to check the CAT's efficiency. it gives u a CEL and that's it.

if it's front, your car will NEVER be able to go into closed loop operation, you gonna have garbage mpg and some idle issues. car drives but it will ALWAYS run on default fuel maps. and this sensor is replaceable by anyone who knows how to use a ratchet & socket and some basic understanding of how to work around cars. after all these years the sensor might be stuck (which is common for ALL cars), so it might be a good thing to use PB on it for a few days (soak it every 2 hours) before you try to remove it.

again, give us the exact code would be BETTER.

What do I mean it's tuning related? I mean the results I get when I search the forum for information on "o2 sensor bank 2 sensor 1" etc were in the tuning/performance type of threads, usually regarding ECM programming and fuel curves, which is why they are no help to me. I'm not trying to performance tune my engine at this time, I am simply troubleshooting a check engine light.

I was told from the operator who pulled the code for me exactly what I said. The resulting code indicated a bank 2 sensor 1 O2 sensor failure.

I meant what I said. Most of the results I found were performance/tuning/programming related and not basic troubleshooting. I simply needed some basic information. I thought I asked politely.

Thank you kindly for answering my 2nd question however. That is greatly appreciated. I will make a note of that and look for any additional performance or mileage issues.

PS, do you really expect someone with 10 posts to know what "closed loop operation" is in regards to engine issues? Would someone who clearly stated that technical schematics or sensor/ecm programming was not helpful to them know what the hell that meant?

I'll get the codes again tomorrow if I can harass my friends at the shop to borrow their code reader again, and I'll write down the actual codes this time instead of just what they translated to.

[Edit, I see you edited your response with additional information. I appreciate that. I've got a decent set of tools and lift access, so replacing the sensor itself should not be too much of a problem assuming I can find it. Of course, that garage has no heat, so hopefully it will be ok until things thaw out here in the midwest]

1 bank, 2 sensors. Bank 1 sensor 1 is front O2, Bank 1 sensor 2 is rear O2

Cars with separate headers (like V8s) tend to have more than 1 'bank' of cylinders, and thus headers, and thus exhaust streams complete with O2 sensors.

A bank 1 sensor 1 failure (front O2), it's pretty significant. The O2 sensor is only ignored at full throttle, and is critical to closed loop operation, full economy, emissions, cat life, carbon buildup, etc... possible chance of engine damage if the failure causes the ECU to suddenly pull too much fuel and have a severe lean spike.

Shadetree mechanic is fine. Sensor is easily reachable under the car if the car is on a lift (on top of the header, so it's difficult with the car just on jack stands), and just 1 connector and unscrew it from the header (probably with some heat treating, they tend to get seized in there). I had a random mechanic replace mine a couple years back, cost me $20 cash for the labor.

I replaced my front O2 (A.K.A. the AFR) with the car in stands, and I agree, it's pretty cramped. But it's doable (for me anyway, and I'm thin). You just need an O2 sensor socket to fit over it. The cheapest place I found to get the O2 sensors is amazon.com, and that's where I got mine. Just look up the part number for the NTK replacement on advance auto's website and cross reference the part numbers

I wonder, could someone please post the correct part numbers for these two sensors? Amazon links, perhaps? For the example, the NTK sensors mentioned above? There are so many different parts that are claimed to be correct.

My particular car is a 2004 manual shift.

Search on rockauto.com. The front o2 is much more expensive than the rear. Keep that in mind.
