No power after 4000rpm

Hey everyone, I just bought my 04 rx8 6spd. I bought it knowing there was an engine issue and just wanted it for a project and toy for the summer.

Well i'm getting CEL PP0037, PP0410, PP0138 and PP2259.
CEL PP0410 and PP0138 go away after a few minutes warming up, but PP0037 and PP2259 remain.

The car idles fine and works good revving up to 4000rpm then it just wont go further as much as i press on the gas pedal.

The issue i know about is that my air pump is not working at all, even on cold start ups. Also the previous owner added a gutted cat/test pipe into the car which could be throwing the PP037. From what i have read both of these issues should not put the car into "limp" mode if i'm reading correctly.

I'm curious what you all think the issue may be, i have ran the car with the cat removed to make sure there was no blockage further down the exhaust. Also the previous owner just changed the coils. Any feed back would be great!

I was just reading that even though there is not a code for the oil metering pump that this can cause the issue too?

The OMP code may not show up on a regular OBD scanner, some people have had problems with that. I think your instinct is correct, it sounds like OMP failure. It seems like most of the time it's just a frayed wire, rather than something actually wrong with the OMP... pull the battery, it's below that and can be easily examined.

Just wanted to update: I was checking the omp wire harness and found the coolant line right above the omp is dripping coolant on the omp and connectors. Going to investigate further.

On the side of the omp there is a black sensor that if comes loose it can rotate a few degrees and cause limp mode, check that only two screws holding it on. Also the omp itself has a motor inside it that opens and closes the omp as well as turns that sensor. I replaced the omp on mine during my rebuild because the motor in my omp went out causing limp mode. New there like $1300 but I picked mime up on eBay for $200

I got it working, there was no cel for my omp but I noticed a coolant leak dripping onto it. So I took off the omp and dissembled the whole thing. The coolant had gummed up the motor and gears. Freed it all up and cleaned it very well and now it's working like a champ :) hope this helps someone who has the same problem some day.

Hey guys!...long time reader...first time commenting. Thought that I would add comment here to keep similar thread going. Think I have a bad water pump and wanted your expertise before going to stealerships. Stored the 8 over the winter, started a couple times over the winter but since it's almost April in Wisconsin thought that I should get it going again. Had to jump it since the battery was dead. That was fine but I had noticed a weird noise which I would call intermittent whining coming from the passenger side engine bay. It was in neutral (It's a manual). Been doing some reading and originally thought it was a bad air pump but don't believe so now. It's a cold start (was is low 40's today) so obviously ran rough to start but settled in. The whine was happening occasionally during idling. Later when I revved the engine it whined again. It's not the belts. After around 5 minutes or so I could smell a little antifreeze. I checked under the car and there was no leaks...didn't check on the back side of the water pump yet, but suspect it is leaking. Had the engine replaced at 92k and now have 123k. Also had the radiator and hoses replaced with OEM. Also had the belts replaced within the last year or two. I'll upload the sound...need to edit the clip. I'll post in a bit. Thanks ahead of time.......

you need to get a piece of hose and stick it to your ear, then search around the motor area with the other end. starting with the h2o pump.

but i think you are correct.

Thanks Swoope. I’ll check water pump after work tomorrow.
PS: Thought I posted this under the water pump thread but I guess not.

replace all you coolant hoses if you have not. might have cost me a motor. :(

That’s for the tips. Ended up changing the water pump, thermostat, and the alternator (man...I think they built the whole car around the thermostat). All old and needed to be replaced anyway. I think it is the air pump for the cat. After revving engine and tach drops down to normal idle the engine sputters, tach dips a bit more then catches itself to normalize. I think it’s time to work on the exhaust.

I noticed a leaky hos on my omp also. Going to try this today. Hopefully it works. Pulled apart an old omp only noticed 1 gear assembly o can get to behind the sensor. The other connection is a magnetic piece. So I'll do what I can. Thanks for the tip and I'll report the results.

Coolant leak on omp.

Ok so fixed the leak coming from a hose on my thermostat housing, removed omp cleaned it resealed it installed it. Cleared the codes... still in limp mode. Looks like 1600$ is about to get paid for a new omp.
