New coils cured my rough idle

'04 MT 6spd 68k I had rough idle to the point that at stoplights, I would turn off my AC and use the parking brake so I could try to keep the rpms up a little. Just changed my coils and drove about 2 miles after warming up of course. No more rough idle even with the AC on. Even dips down to about 500k with no vibration. The 2 inner coils had several white spots. The front bumper side out had a little bit of white mark, and the rear outer didn't appear to have any white spots. Haven't driven much yet, my TSC light didn't go away yet. If I notice any differences after my 70 mile round trip commute tonight, I'll post them here...:smoker: and its now 4:20

TSC light I believe requires a reset which is covered in the manual somewhere requiring you to turn the wheel all the one way and then back all the other way a couple times.

I replaced my coils yesterday and my idle is as smooth as butter and the car jumps off the line it's amazing! Something I've noticed is that the exhaust pops so much more with the new coils but hay sounds goods to me!

Thanks a lot guys ... you know ... i was just ready to click the "buy" button on the GreddySE exhaust, and now you go and do this.... talk about throwing an audible.... back to the drawing boards on the exhaust vs ignition debate lol (i just finished my suspension vs exhaust debate damn you)

Just got back from my 80 mile post new coils drive. Smooth all the way up till rev limiter. I actually got jerked forward when it kicked in in 2nd gear. Idle is alot smoother although there is still a little intermittent idle vibration at stop lights, but not as bad as it was. I was debating earlier today weather or not to tackle the job, and I'm glad I did...

Mind if I ask the mileage of your car as well as year?

Why are you debating over coils or exhaust? They seem too different. Only enough money for 1 or the other? If thats the case I'd go with coils. Cheaper and better for your car in the long run...:beer05:

paimon.soror 07-13-2010 08:31 PM

Well i just bought the car a month ago, so im kind of in the phase of "I WANT TO BUY EVERYTHING" but then i settle down and say "ok easy now, bills...". So i'm basically trying to prioritize lol. Only reason i voted against springs/struts is because none are optimized for the S2 yet....so then i was like "ok exhaust" .... but seeing as I can get the coils and have some money left over for something else .... but then i debate if coils are really a priority at the moment considering i only have 902 miles on the car lol

see whats goin on in my head!

C-PHLAT 07-13-2010 08:36 PM

Yes I get it. Do keep in mind that certain upgrades can void your warranty. If you only have 902 miles on your car, I wouldn't do anything yet. I've heard people say you really shouldn't start upgrading cars untill after 20k or so. Let's everything get broken in. But hey, I've never bought a "new" car before. But I did hear that from a friend who's upgraded several cars for drifting, including a 2nd generation RX-7. If you do upgrades, make sure you let us know the results.

Yea I actually purchased my last car new as well, and really started upgrading after its first breakin oil change (~1500 miles). I make sure that when I do upgrades they are on parts that have a small chance of hurting the car, i.e. exhaust, or intake, or something. Considering the coils are something that would freak out mazda if they ever saw it, i may hold off and just go with the exhaust. And no worries, I will take plenty of pics and such :)

While you're at the drawing board...research exhausts for the RX8 a little more and learn that the GreddySE is not the right choice. TY :grouphug:

After a near-accident at a round-about where my coils chose to suddenly fail, I suggest everyone replace their coils to more durable ones. Coils failure can cause some real bad chain reaction.

What happened exactly? Seems unlikly that 2 or more coils would fail at once. Unless the other 3 had already failed...

Charles, searching on this forum leads to several different answers from multiple people who "think" they know what they are talking about but most are only repeating things they've read on here from someone else who didn't know what they were talking about and so on...I posted this thread as an observation that was an answer to a question I had but couln't really find a definative answer to on here...or just didn't know what to search for...so my idle improved after changing my coils...just an observation:beer05:

C-PHLAT 07-14-2010 10:39 AM

Yes that's deep. Too bad some of the worse examples of these kinds of people end up in high places like politics, heads of coorporations, cops, etc...:uhh:

Not talking about BHR...Should have specified and said MAJOR coorporations, like Wal-Mart, BP, Bank of America, GM, you know....the evil ones:suspect:

We take our work seriously, but not ourselves. ;)

I know you knew what I meant, but others may not be as quick to pick up on context clues...If I do make to AZ again anytime soon, I will. I have some family in Cottonwood and was over there back in Oct of last year. That was the pre-triangle protion of my life...

C-PHLAT 07-14-2010 11:05 AM

Oh yeah, what's with all the old school Porsches in the Sedona area? "pre"-triangle not "pink" tweeter

C-PHLAT 07-14-2010 11:08 AM

Oh yeah I think we drove past his ranch...at least my cousin said he thought it was his as we drove past in the rented Malibu. Btw Sedona and Cottonwood
