need new engine? or is it fixable?

So for some while now my engone has been getting worse and worse..at 1st it just took a little longer to take off and gas was a little worse..but now its way worse, i hear some rattling noise comming from the engine, it REAL loud..at 1st it was just on the take off for a few seconds, but not its even when im going around 70mph..eveyr time it rattles it makes like a jerking motion and the car slows down. Also now that noise can last up to like 20 secs and its feeling like crap. Earlier I was going up a bridge with the cruise on @ 75 and then i noticed it started to rattle again and it slowed down to 65 before the rattling stopped and it slowly sped up again..and finally when im in idle the arrow moves from 750 to 1250 for no reasson...

my car is a 05 AT with 56k miles on it and no engines mod except for a k&n drop in filter..oil is 5w30 penzoil and i do regular maintanace on the car.

jasonrxeight 01-15-2011 03:42 PM

when was the last time you changed spark plugs and coils?
when the problem happens, any check engine light flashing?

Mazurfer 01-15-2011 03:46 PM

Thought about those Jason.........but something tells me this might the the clogged CAT.
Of course................then the questions is.........if CAT, then did bad coils/plugs lead to it?
Yeah, I sort of wondered why he didn't mention a CEL either?????

shaunv74 01-15-2011 04:05 PM

Sounds like detonation. Coils plugs and wires are in order on an 05 with 56k if they are original. You can pick up the parts and do it yourself for $300-$350.

+1 on the cat as a possibility but it's probably worth doing the coils first. Although if you are able to jack up the car it's worth inspecting the inside of the cat first as this would be free to do yourself before you drop $350 on ignition.

Rigoherrera 01-15-2011 04:13 PM

well i just got the car like 5 months ago and i do think everything is still the original crap..i got an appointment in 3 day at a good mazda dealer here in town for a diagnostics and a complession test but i wanna know if anyone has had this problem before i give the dealer 200 bucks 2 just check my car..lol..and about the wires and plugs and all that, im thinking about the BHR kit since ive heard it helps alot

Rigoherrera 01-15-2011 04:14 PM

also every now and then i hear a loud backfire from the exhaust, not the normal ones from when u let off the gas real quick and stuff but a louder one

Rigoherrera 01-15-2011 04:14 PM

and no i have no CEL on

Agreed. A rattle under my car ended up netting me a free new cat!! At 60k.

No other issues!! No CEL.

Rigoherrera 01-15-2011 09:07 PM

how do u get a new cat for free?

jasonrxeight 01-15-2011 11:18 PM

the car comes with a 8 year emission warranty.
the dealer will test the cat see if replacing is necessary.

Blacknightz 01-15-2011 11:41 PM

nice to hear a free cat...

Rigoherrera 01-15-2011 11:42 PM

oh ok..cool cool..and yeah im not gonna get the compression test anymore, im just gonna get the regular diagnostics

To be more specific, it is 8 yrs/80K miles.

Rigoherrera 01-16-2011 12:21 AM

im still able 2 get that! hell yes!

Mazurfer 01-16-2011 09:15 AM

The loud backfire you hear is most likely unburnt fuel getting ignited on the way out in the CAT.

This is MOST likely to be due to bad spark of the plugs or coils. This in turn takes out the CAT over time.

Since the CAT would be free as others have said for 8 years or 80k miles, have them check that and obviously the coils/plugs. The BHR system isn't a magic pill, but it's damn good! :yesnod:

Even if you decide to stay with OEM coils, get them online with the plugs and do it yourself and you will save a ton of cash! :yesnod:

shaunv74 01-16-2011 11:48 AM

+1 exactly.

Rigoherrera 01-16-2011 01:24 PM

yea im gonna do it all myself i just need the dealer 2 look at it 2 see exacly whats wrong before i start buying things i dont need..and yeah im gonna get that BHR ignition and the soark plugs they sell there 2

Mazurfer 01-16-2011 05:38 PM

Well.........have the dealer check the CAT and if bad, get your free one!
I wouldn't run the "new" CAT until you get the coils/plugs squared away.

Rigoherrera 01-16-2011 06:11 PM

ok, thanks!

Blacknightz 01-17-2011 03:58 AM

do update us on what was diagnosed...

Rigoherrera 01-17-2011 09:26 AM

i will..can goes in 2morrow and ill let yall know what they tell me..then ill start fixing it and updating yall

Rigoherrera 01-17-2011 09:27 AM

oh and another update is that my car hassent done that jerking motion since i posted this..

shaunv74 01-17-2011 10:43 AM

see. Just talking to us solves your problems! :)

Rigoherrera 01-17-2011 11:19 AM

yes it does..lol..its like im going 2 therapy for my car.lol

Mazurfer 01-17-2011 07:53 PM

Naw.....it really cause it's scared of us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rigoherrera 01-17-2011 07:54 PM

lol, ok then

Rigoherrera 01-18-2011 08:20 AM

dealer 2day, lets see what ends up happening

Rigoherrera 01-18-2011 12:15 PM

Well so far I've been at the dealer 4 hours...1st I got told as soon as I got here that they don't check my cat unless the CEL is on..2nd they are still looking at it and they threw me a free compression test instead of paying 100 for it because they think I might need a new engine..lol..greeeat

shaunv74 01-18-2011 01:43 PM

Cat can still be bad without a CEL. There are two elements in the cat. One can be melted and clogging up your cat. while the other is still doing it's job. Ask them if you need a CEL for them to check your brakes or suspension too?

Rigoherrera 01-18-2011 01:48 PM

lol, ill ask right now..and yeah right now im in the last steps for getting a confirmation on me needed a new engine..they are just doing a decarb now...which i did on my own last week..lol

Rigoherrera 01-18-2011 11:19 PM

So in the end this is what happened..didn't get my cat looked at..but I do need a new engine.all free even install..should get it in 2 to 3 weeks..all I need to buy seperate is plugs and coils..also I need my transmission fluid changed because it was pitch black

Rigoherrera 02-14-2011 02:27 PM

so another update for whoever is following this...today i took my car in for the new engine, about 3 hours after i took it i get a call telling me im gonna get a free cat because the one i had was pretty much useless..so what i needed was a new engine, new cat, new coils, and new spark plugs..lol..now when everything is installed all im missing is my coils. I ordered the ignition system from BHR so ill tell yall how that is, the dealer didnt recommend using all those new things with the bad coils still on, so im waiting on my ignition 2 arrive now

shaunv74 02-15-2011 12:44 AM

Imagine that. The cat was bad even without a cel. ;)

Agreed on installing all at the same time. BTW: The BHR ignition system comes with wires and you can buy plugs separately as well. Don't bother buying them separate.

Fixed that for ya. :D:

Rigoherrera 02-15-2011 10:19 AM

yeah my cat was going crazy and they still would check it! lol..but when my light finally came on i checked my cat and it was all red and stuff...and about the plugs, i got them separate, the ones you add in the kit are almost an extra 90 dollars. So i just got the NGK laser iridium ones from autozone..lol.there like 90 bucks 2, but my brother works there so i got them for like 50..lol

Blacknightz 02-17-2011 10:11 PM

so replacing the cat or getting straight pipe?

Rigoherrera 02-18-2011 12:10 AM

just getting the free cat from the dealer for now

Rigoherrera 02-25-2011 07:33 PM

AAAAAH! FML! i wrote this long thing and it didnt submit, ill give it another shot..lol

so the final diagnostics about my car was a new engine (free), new cat (free), new coils (350), new NGK plugs (60)...and yeah car runs great now! apparently BHR coils will void your warranty so i had to buy the stock ones..dammit i dont remember what i wrote before..lol..well yeah people if your car feels even a little weird dont be afraid to get it looked at by the dealer! idk about yall, but here in houston a diagnostics is 90 bucks, if they think u have low compression they will give u a free compression test, which usually runs for 200 dollars...then if you flunk that they will need to give u an engine clean up which is 109 dollars, just to make sure its just not dirty...if that fails 2, you will get a new engine for free, only if ur under 100k miles...if u do get the engine the diagnostics will be free, so all you pay is the 109 for the clean up..and thats it!

hope i help people with this thread, thanks for following guys! and thank you mazurfer and shaunv for telling me about the cat, im sure mazda probably wouldnt have..lol THANKS!

monchie 02-27-2011 02:05 AM

Free engine...woohoo!!! Lucky you.

shaunv74 02-27-2011 05:08 PM

Excellent! I'm happy everything has worked out for you. enjoy!

1.3_LittersOfFurry 02-27-2011 05:35 PM

Were you able to keep using the car till the new engine arrived, or did it have to stay at the dealer?

-Shawn

Rigoherrera 02-27-2011 08:31 PM

thanks man, and yeah shawn i could still drive it the whole time, but it just kept feeling worse and worse

Blacknightz 03-12-2011 10:11 AM

Nice to hear that... so no spending and just free, free....

Rigoherrera 03-13-2011 03:37 AM

yeah most of it was free, so thats always great, i just needed 2 buy the small parts, just the plugs and coils
