My mazda dealership said check the oil while the engine is running....
 
Hahah--

Here's the story:

I went in last week for an oil change last week and later on that night i checked the dipstick and it was way over, matter a fact the invoice even said they filled up 5 quarts, when they really should have only put in 3.6.

So i called them up and took it to them this morning, when I went in they said i didn't know how to check the oil on a rotary and the way it should be done is to do it when the motor is warmed up or still running...


Oh gosh, i'm really sick of Naperville Motors. Their service department is giving me the biggest pain in the a**... I thought coming from my Bmw 3-ser i wouldn't have to deal with all that maintainance headach's with a new car, but I am... and it sucks :mad:

warmed up is correct- the otehr part is not. did you read your manual?

Warm yes, running no. Some service departments suck. I'm pretty sure it's in the manual: check the oil after driving and letting the car cool off a bit, and I know the oil quantities are in the manual. You'd think they'd read up on the cars they're servicing.

The thing is the car wasn't cooled off, i even told the guy I had been driving it all day long. And yeah i kind of figured " check it while the engine is running " was incorrect, so i told them they would be recieve a letter from me...

When I lived in Ohio, I always did my own maintenance on my cars. Living in the city, it's not that easy so I was forced to take it into a shop. I took it to Jiffy Lube, I nearly passed out from the experience, let's just say that the least worse thing was when they went to fill it with the "gun" and it blew my dipstick out and oil droplets were straying everywhere...

Needless to say, no matter what, I will do whatever it takes to change my own oil and do whatever "routine" maintenance I can myself.

undefinedundefined Ok.. Here's an ancient history lesson. On all my old Rotary cars I always checked the oil with the motor running. Let's just say that we have and oil cooler or two, some oil lines and a sump. When one changes the oil who knows how much oil is left in that cooler or line/s. Now.. with the engine running, under pressure, the oil is circulating and should be at (obviously not the full hash mark) but at some point on the dip stick. On the old rotary cars a good guess was about half way between full and add. So you got an idea of where the level should be talking an average of how many quarts the complete system holds, level at cold, and level and warm and while running. It isn't that hard to see where it should be when running and a heck of a lot easier than waiting till all the oil settles from the afore mentioned oil coolers and lines on a warm engine. It was a great way to check the oil and see exactly how much was in the sump during operation. And you really have to wonder why any marque that burns oil as part of the process would take it to cover the fill tube and make the dipstick so hard to read.. Anyway.. don't make to quick judgements on things you might not understand. I do wish some of these newbie Mazda designers had a little more of history in grasp before setting their pencils in motion.

The total oil capacity of the Renesis is around 7 qts, so depending on how the oil is drained from the pan and filter, it's possible that more than 4 qts would be required for a refill. Around 2-3 qts remain in the oil cooler(s) and oil lines. So 3.6 (actually 3.7 in the US manual) is not a firm number.
