motor turns and turns won't fire over

my daughters car will turn and turn as far as motor but will not fire over.... this problem just happened with no warning or indication. checked all the fuses, not sure how to check the relays.... but hooked up jumper cables and it acts stronger when trying to crank but will not fire over so i think this eliminates the battery? my buddy says maybe cam position sensor......is that a possibility? Was trying to eliminate the simple obvious things. One other thing i'm concerned about is it possible the chip in the key gone bad....is that possible and what are the symptoms, we only have one key so i can't just switch keys.

any advice would be so helpful and thanks in advance!

What year is the car? You might want to hop on over to howstuffworks.com and type in a rotary engine -- rotaries are completely different from piston engine cars ... they don't have what you would consider a cam, so no camshaft sensor.

It sounds like it's flooded, but without more information, no one on this board will be able to help you. I'm still learning about the ins and outs of this car, but I have learned that the best place to go when I don't know what's wrong is Mazda. They're expensive, but they will have someone that knows. My dealer has 2 RX-8 specialists. I don't trust anyone else to work on it. I've read about many members having their car worked on in a repair shop of any kind, and coming back to a flooded engine (especially '04 and '05 models) because it was run cold, then shut off while the computer was dumping excess fuel into the combustion chamber to get the engine to running temp. Result: flooded engine. Acts like a dead engine, too.

'04 and '05 8's are prone to engine failure as well.

Edit: If the chip in the key was faulty, I believe the entire electrical system of the car would shut down and the car wouldn't crank at all.

thanks and sorry but car is an 04' and i'm worried it might be something to do with key as i read some of these posts as this problem just popped up out of no where as i stated car motor turns and turns but won't fire over and i am seeing the symbol of the car with the key in it flashing on the dash..... the dash lights and such do work but i notice them go off evry so often while i'm trying to start it now.....

If it's the key, then you'll need to take both to the dealer so they can reprogram the chip. I would take it in, and tell them it's cranking and not starting. I got mine in the shop like that and they deflooded it, changed the plugs, with Mazda picking up the bill. If its an '04, it is possible that the starter was never upgraded.

That light flashes on my car when the car is off, but mine starts just fine. The trunk latch opens, the car locks and unlocks. I had the battery replaced in my key because it was weak and wouldn't always open the doors. But it never had problems starting the car, even with a weak battery.

How many miles on your car? When was the last time you had it in for routine maintenance (plugs/coils)?

use keywords in the search engine like "flooded", "deflood procedure", etc. If the key on your dash is illuminating, do as Raivynn suggested and replace the battery.
