Missfire
Hey,
I got CEL yesterday and today i went to autozone to check it. So i have missfire in "cylinder" 2 :) I'm going to order spark plugs, coils and cables this week. Question is how long can i drive with that without any harm? |
you should be fine with normal driving but you want to change everything out as soon as you can.
mpg will suffer as will the car's performance. www.onlinemazdaparts.com has great prices on that stuff |

Don't try to get the parts from the dealer, as they might (really likely) screw you over in changing them.
|
You shouldn't pay anymore then around $25 per plug, $30-$35 per coil, and wires just depend on what you want. I know my dealer wanted for the plugs around $40 something, but mazda beat the parts store by around $10 for the coils.
Advanced was around $45-$50 per coil, mazda was around $30-$35. Make sure if you were to get wires from the parts store that they are the right one, cause advanced insisted that the wires they tried to sell me were the right ones and they looked like they went on my honda crv.:icon_no2: |
coils from www.waynemazdafactoryparts.com are 25.33 each and the wires are 56.60

I noticed my car had a coolant light and CEL on the other day. I found and replaced a blown coolant hose. The car idled very rough and sounded like it was going to stall out. I took it to autozone for a code check. I got a misfire code and a intake valve code. The person at autozone told me the intake valve could be sticking because of dirt or sand. I was told I should put the car on the highway and open it up, and if that doesn'thelp and theI noticed my CEL was on the other day as well.use some carb cleaner on it. The father in law and I took the car on the highway for a spirited 30 mile round trip I folowed him to check for smoke or anything else comming from the tail pipe. The car ran fine with no further problems. My only issue is the CEL stays on, it doesn't blink or anything just constant on. Is there anyway to turn the CEL light off since the car is running fine? Oh yeah, the car has been sitting for about 5 months. Sorry for the novel, I just wanted to get the facts out.

Take it back to Autozone, have them read the code again and tell us what it is.
They can/will then reset it it, but if the problem still exists, the CEL will come back on. It comes on for a reason, even if you think it's running right, so go have it read, have them reset it, and then tell us what the code(s) was. Oh......what's your year, mileage, etc? What kind of maintainance have you been doing and when? |

You have the Access Port which is tunned to run lean, so no misfires. Plus you have after market coils. Stop convoluting the problems with these Red Herrings. What you said was just post whoring!:spank: Shodan, Plugs and coils are not a guareentee to get rid of misfires. The car runs too rich from factory. Just, re-set the ECU. If it continues to happen on a regular basis then replace parts. In the mean time keep re-setting the ECU |
misfires are normal if your coils are weak.....
|
Let the problem repeat its self.
If its a continuous re-occurance then you have a problem. I have nothing against a good tune up, but if you don't need it................ |

What kind of maintainance have you been doing and when? It's a 2004 6speed plain jane with no frills and it's got 62,681 miles. We have the oil changed every 3K miles and have major maintenance performed as scheduled. The only issue is the last oil change. I bought a SRT Challenger in Aug '08, and the wife stopped driving the RX-8 (her car) and started driving the ram again. So the RX-8 sit for months. From Aug to Jan we only drove it about six times so we didn't have the oil changed. The car sat through the summer dust storms and winter rains/frost here in Vegas. Thanks for the help. |
Re-set the ECU. Look at the stickies.

What you said was just post whoring!:spank: Oh, and continuously resetting the ECU won't fix the misfires. all you're doing is resetting the fuel trims in an attempt to mask the problem If you want to cure the misfires, you need to address the issue at hand. Most likely culprits are coils, wires, or spark plugs. |
I'm still getting it. Now just random misfire.
tried 3 times to cruse at 8k rpm. 2 times random misfire after 20sec and 3rd time no problems :P. I'm getting coils and rest of stuff on Tuesday. Well i already bought it so i might as well change it. 5 years on original spark plugs is kinda overkill i think :P |
I've changed everything today. Car is running smooth and no problems with anything.
I just have 1 question. Leading spark plugs look the same, but Trailing one of them is longer. Both of them have "T" symbol and blue endings but one look exactly the same as Leading:Eyecrazy: http://lh5.ggpht.com/_bCZ8atduGlY/Sd...500_AA280_.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/_bCZ8atduGlY/Sd...500_AA280_.jpg |
On the trailing Plugs do they both say RE9BT?
Stock Plugs are Leading- RE7CL Trailing- RE9BT |
Well i put them already in so hard to tell.
Both boxes were RE9B-T but only 1 of them looked like that: http://lh5.ggpht.com/_bCZ8atduGlY/Sd...500_AA280_.jpg Well car is running fine so i don't think it matters. Old plugs were mixed on one side anyway :P |
