Mazda broke another one

So, I went to fill up my car yesterday and like normal, the pump finished and I carried on. Only when driving a little bit did I realize my gauge for fuel only said it was ~3/4th of the way full. So, I pulled over to another gas station (in case it was just that pump) and put in another 1.x gallons worth. Again, the gauge said it was only ~3/4th the way full.

When driving I smell what could be a little fuel, but I don't know if that was me being crazy or what. This wasn't a problem before and the only thing that I know touched anything to do with fuel is the Mazda dealership I brought it to for the fuel pump recall.

Is this probably where the problem lies? I am going to call them and bring it into them asap. Though, I want to make sure I am not going to be going down some stupid expensive rabbit hole.

The recall was for the fuel pump retaining ring, this problem has nothing to do with that, it's just bad timing.

True, but to replace the ring you've got to undo the fuel lines. I don't think they should be taking out the pump for just the ret-ring, but if they are, they would then be messing with wires from the level sensor.

Anything is possible with a dealership but there is no reason to pull the pump out and they will likely state the same.

Hm, this reminds me of a similar issue that was common with my STi. There are 2 sensors in that car, one on each side of the tank and if one of them goes, it would read about 3/4 full. The fix was to pull the secondary level sensor and clean it. I know the RX8 tank has an access hatch on both sides, might be worth it to check that the wiring is plugged in securely on each side, and if nothing else, take the shit apart and clean it?

Agree 100%.

I'll try pulling the sensors and clean them. Yea, it could be 'bad timing' but it seems every time I bring in that car to a dealership I get it back worst than it was before, and this time nothing was even wrong with it.
