theres a button combination that "reprograms" or resets the ac amplifier. i always forget what it is. theres a tsb on it somewhere. its also just plug and play. unplug the old one and plug in the new one if you have to replace it. its under the dash by the driver (left hand drive car)

AC NOT COOL (AFTER 9/11/03 PRODUCTION) Applicable Models Model Starting S/N Ending S/N 2004 RX8 40118171 ******** Some customers may complain of lack of AC cooling from the vents. This may be caused by the intake air selector (recirculate / fresh) in the "FRESH" mode. Cooling the interior of the vehicle may take longer if the air intake selector is in the "FRESH" mode. Maximum cooling is achieved when the intake air selector mode is in the "RECIRC" position. The AC amplifier can be programmed to automatically default to "RECIRC" mode when the following conditions are met: 1. Ambient air temperature is 68 deg. F or higher. 2. HVAC control mode is in "FACE" mode. 3. HVAC temperature is in maximum cool setting. Customers with this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the repair procedure. NOTE: Vehicles produced before 9/11/2003 are not programmable and should have the AC amp replaced per Service Bulletin # 07-002/04 1. Verify concern. 2. Verify ignition switch is in OFF position. 3. Press and hold the front defrost and air intake selector buttons simultaneously. 4. Turn the ignition key to the "ACC" position for 3 seconds. (Continue to hold the buttons down from step #3.) 5. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position for 3 seconds. (Continue to hold the buttons down from step #4.) 6. Successful programming will be confirmed by the rear defrost indicator light flashing 3 times. NOTE: If vehicle's battery dies or cables are removed, the programming will not be retained and must be performed again. |
thank you for grabbing that Jon- i was off digging up the original tsb for the replacement ac amplifier and was going to dig for it next
A/C AIR TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATION AND / OR LACK OF COOLING Bulletin No: 07-002/04 Last Issued: 4/22/2004 Service Bulletin Mazda North American Operations Irvine, CA 92618-2922 2004 RX-8 - A/C AIR TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATION AND / OR LACK OF COOLING APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS 2004 RX8 VIN: JM1FE17**40 000001-118171 (up to 9/11/03 production). DESCRIPTION Some customers may complain of lack of air conditioner cooling performance and / or a noticable temperature fluctuation (cool-warm-cool) from the vents. The cause may be due to improper logic control of the AC amplifier. Customers having this concern should have their vehicle inspected and if necessary, repaired using the following repair procedure. REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Verify customer concern. 2. Ensure ignition switch is off and key is removed from ignition switch. 3. Locate A/C amplifier on left side of blower case near accelerator pedal. 4. Remove 3 screws attaching A/C amplifier to blower case. 5. Remove harness anchor from A/C amplifier. 6. Disconnect harness connectors from A/C amplifier. 7. Replace with new A/C amplifier. To install, reverse removal procedure. 8. Verify that there is no noticable temperature fluctuation (cool-warm-cool) from the vents. NOTE: Make sure customer is aware that maximum cooling efficiency is achieved by setting temperature blend dial to MAX cool & “FRESH / RECIRC” mode to “RECIRC”. |
its good to bring this up actually since the programming is lost any time the battery is disconnected. coming into summer every one should probably do the programming to make sure they get "optimal" a/c function. there cant be to many people who HAVEN"T had their battery disconnected around here

thanks guys.

Cool. Just did the reset. Thanks!

Kind of on a different tangent. When I try to use my temperature control knob, All the way cold and all the way hot work fine. But anything in between will not work correctly. Is there a way to fix/reset this functionality for my knobs? :-)

makristal- You need to start learning how to use the search feature.
But yes... there is a fix for that problem: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...highlight=temp |
I did search, and I did find that one. I'm just trying to see if there is any other method of doing this besides taking the entire assembly apart and fixing it that way.
|
The issue is insufficient solder in the barrels for that component... nothing other than adding more solder to the joint will fix it.
In the link I posted above instructs how to diagnose it and verify this is whats needed. |
Just wanna know, when not using AC, should there be any lights on the control..??
Mine when I'm not using it, the green or orange light will be on depending on what i used last. How do i turn the AC off? |
so i tried this re-programming of the ac amplifier but it doesn't seem to work, every time i do it i never get the flashing led at the end. Can anyone help, my car is like an oven at the moment.

I am sorry guys my last post wasn't very descriptive or helpful for anyone. To clarify
I have a Mazda Rx8, 5 speed 53 plate which has done just under 50.000 miles. Had it since October 2010. Change and check the oil regularly. Just lately I put my foot down on the gas and it takes a while for the engine to kick in. Starts easily and never had any problems at all (no flooding etc). Engine doesn't make a fuss in anyway just this kind of lag. I have recently been advised by Mazda that this is a clutch related problem rather than anything to do with the lovely engine. This is being done tomorrow hopefully this is the cure. After reading various pieces on similar symptoms I was convinced it was actually misfiring and something to do with engine compression, coils, spark plugs or the CAT. Anyway this was my first post in any forum, let alone one as technical as this so please forgive my initial messy foray. |
Dean, if the clutch were slipping you would hear the revs increase and the car not accelerate as usual ,usually a bad odour can be smelled, Have you replaced the usual items ie; plugs ,coils leads, cleaned the MAF sensor, cleaned the Crank position sensor, done the resets for the ECM.
|
It was the clutch and is sorted. Your description of the symptoms were spot on. She drives like a dream again. In fact I am starting to think the clutch was on its way out when I bought it and I didn't realise because of the low torque thats unique to the 8. Anyway thanks for the advice and I will be looking at the plugs etc in due course.
