Keyless Receiver/Control Module

I've been looking through the threads and have founds lots of things about reprogramming key fobs (which I tried), but nothing about the keyless receiver or control module.

Background: couple of months ago my (stock) keyless entry got spotty and then eventually stopped working. I replaced the batteries in my key fobs (and checked at Autozone that they were sending a signal) and tried reprogramming with the steps from previous posts but still no luck. :wallbash:

I looked through the electrical diagrams and it appears that both the receiver and module are accessible through the glove box opening (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Does anyone have any ideas of how I can verify if one of these electrical components is broken? If I take it out, how would I go about testing it? Could I bring the parts to the dealership and they could tell me?

Thanks in advance,
Paul

It's a real pain to test the keyless module, so start with the keyless receiver which is behind the glovebox. Test the terminals, and if the voltage doesn't check out , look to replace the receiver first. If you have to replace the keyless module, it will require dealer reprogramming to get it to work.

Ngo - thanks for the info. Hopefully it is the receiver and not the module.

Terminal Testing Follow up

I've located the keyless receiver and unmounted it enough to test it more easily. And now I have a question (possibly dump/noob): how do I go about testing the terminals? I bought a voltage meter, which I think I can use to test it. Do I have to strip the wires going into the terminal to test the voltage as there really isn't anything exposed to test.

Thanks

Does my car have the control module ?

Hi I just have my rx8 some weeks ago, i have bought the car used, it comes with a key, manual key, no control, how do i know if i my car has a control module installed in order to buy a control ?

This is another question, can i make a copy of this key, in order to have more than one in case i lost it, or it has a chip ?

It's a rx8, 2004

Yes peel the insulation off a small bit on each wire and test it. You can use wire taps just to crimp to the wire for a signal as well, but I prefer peeling the insulation because it does not cut any of the copper wire.

The car will not run without the keyless control module. The 2004 Key has a chip in the head of it which will allow it to turn the alarm off, start car, etc. As long as the alarm is never activated by the keyless remote (wherever it is since you don't have it) you will not have a problem. To program a remote though, is going to take a dealer since you cannot program it without at least 1 remote. To program a key, you need 2 keys before hand.

Thanks Ngo, I'll try this when I get some time.

Ngo - when I am testing each terminal how do I know what other terminal to put the multimeter on? I know it's a probably a noob quetsions, I'm just having trouble reading the inspection sheet you attached.

Thanks

No I got lazy and stuck on the testing the keyless receiver, but need to get on this, it sucks having to manually open everything.

you reference everything to ground. reference E to another ground point and if it checks out you can reference A, B, and C all to E.

What is the easiest way to remove the keyless module? ive already tested the receiver and the voltages are correct
