K&N Filter Causing the CEL ?

I went to this place and they checked for me, it saids its the MAF sensor that triggered the CEL. Probably a leak somewhere or something.

They told me to put the original Airbox back in just to see what happens.

I mean, I've been using the kit just fine for a while and no way that it just all of the sudden problems comes up.

Im using the New K&N, with RB ruct. It was all running just fine until few days ago.

Also when I told them the clutch seems slippy they said it might be just the MAF was confused about the air and its not sucking enough air in thats why the car was like "slippy/choppy/horse back riding kind of feel"

You guys think this might be true ? or I simply have a Bad MAF Sensor.

Because my K&N setup is working perfectly fine for months. (Until Now ...)

Is the maf dirty? I haven't seen an Rx8 MAF, but generally if the IAT sensor (if the maf and IAT sensor are in one unit) is black, its usually a good indicator that the maf is also dirty, which can give the car irratic idle and hestitation.

Generally maf's and iat sensors tend to get dirtier faster from cotton gauze style filters, because of the oil used in the filter medium, and the fact they filter less then standard paper style filters.

Otherwise just do the standard hose and clamp check. Make sure everything is where its supposed to be. It would probably also be helpful to have your actual cel code #...there are a bunch of maf codes.

Crossbow is correct. There are threads dealing with oil-fouled/dirty MAF sensor. Do a search and see if the symptoms are similar to yours.

Well, I Pull the MAF Sensor out to look today.

Im not sure which part is which since Im new to the automobile world.

I see a Black circle, and next to it theres a "looks like plastic" kind of ball with black stuff on it all over the place. I can see some clear parts on the very top of that "plastic kind of ball" but the ball itself is pretty "black" if you ask me.

Im going to get the Scannlyer or whatever thing for my laptop, so I can read the codes, but its going to take a while.

In the mean time, Does that mean its dirty ? if yes then what do I need to clean it ?

thanks.

Just Found this picture when I search the forum.

Hmm, the black plastic thing to the right (mine) is all covered in black. wheres the MaF actually is ? inside the center to the left ?

Thanks again.

Quick Update :

After reading all the stuff about "cleaning the MAF sensor"

I ran out, kinda chilly but ahh I took the MAF sensor out and wipe it all over with Rubbing Alcohol, Hmm the result is

I can feel a little improvement, but nothing much changed, still very "slippery" kind of choking feeeling on the car.

The image you posted is the IAT sensor. (Intake air temp sensor). The maf sensor is inside the black plastic device.

If you flip it upside down, and look up it, you'll see a set of tiny wires.

DO NOT TOUCH THESE WIRES!!!!

You'll need a bottle of electrical cleaner from an autoparts stores with one of those nifty red nozzle attachments.

Basically you just spray the living crap outta the inside of the sensor (DO NOT TOUCH THOSE WIRES!!!!! DO NOT TOUCH THEM WITH THE NOZZLE!!!), let it dry, spray the hell outta it, let it dry, spray the hell outta the IAT sensor, let it dry. Put it back together.

Make sure to pull the negative battery terminal while your working on this stuff, as its very easy to short the maf by accident when fiddling with intakes.

I've been meaning to do a maf cleaning how-to on 6tech...maybe I should hurry up and do it so you fellas can benefit as well.

Oh and if possible, try to cover up the rubber gromet. Tape would work. The electrical cleaner isn't very healthy for the rubber o-ring, so protect it if you can while spraying the hell outta the insides. DO NOT TOUCH THOSE WIRES!!

Thanks for the advise, sadly I already *touched* it, but please listen to my thoughts first.

Since the people said they're getting crazy readings on the airflow right now, the "only" thing i can think of that sense airflow is the MAF/IAT sensor.

The only thing I installed (so far) are the

RB Ram air duct
New K&N Typhoon Filter.

I installed the new K&N around a month or 2 ago, the Ram air duct around a month ago.

everything works just fine until last thursday afternoon.

I mean, the only parts I can think of, that can fail and affects the airflow readings is the MAF/IAT sensor. maybe Im missing something, oh theres one wire connected to the RB Ram duct during install, it was there before but they keep using it , I forgot what it was tho.

Its gotta be something eletrical that causes the problem, I think.

Anyway, I am ordering the sCANalyser For Rx8 From Hymee enHanced right now, just trying to see if I can get the actual code myself.

I wrote up a little article for future reference.
http://www.mazda6tech.com/index.php?...id=62&Itemid=1

Though its not specifically for the 8, as long as you know where your maf is, it still applies.

nycgps 11-07-2005 12:22 AM

Well Crossbow.

My idle is fine for now, its just that Im having a hard time trying to "get it up to speed, say, 60mph"

I think it has something to do with the MAF/IAT. Maybe I should get a new one and see?

Even its not, I can already get a spare, dont ya think so ?

OK, which site sells them ... I cant find any.

crossbow 11-07-2005 10:32 AM

Try the parts sites...

Like..

http://www.onlinemazdaparts.com
or
http://www.mazdamart.com
or rx8club probably has a sponsor that has them.

SilverrbRX8 11-13-2005 03:39 AM

can i make a suggestion...get a new MAF....to start then dump that K and N and get the revi...u already have the duct installed correct...i had the KN and yes it was loud but oh it caused problems how it ran....after 6000 rpms i had almost no power and then the revi went on and fixed everything.....also if it makes u feel better the revi uses a K and N filter in it. but ive had 3 intakes on my car and now i preach about using the revi FULL installment ...not just the intake but the full ram air.
