Just had engine replaced and now after driving i get a coolant/syrup smell after driv
 

So Mazda just replaced my engine and now after i drive i park my car in the garage and i get a strange which i think is a coolant smell sort of smells like syrup. Im thinking it could be from my AC because it is not blowing as cold as usual, what do you guys think?

I really dont want to take this thing back to the dealership because i just got my car back any help would be great thanks guys...

Might i add this happens when the AC is on i turned the car off and open the hood and the battery cover and coolant tank was burning hot

Also that after i turn the car off my fan still runs which i think is normal but im not to sure...

Let the shop that put the engine in look at it if you can't find anything. Tell them to fix the AC leak $$$. I have a leaking o-ring. Found it with UV dye.

Fans running after shut down is normal. Read your manual.
Are you loosing any coolant?

They could have overfilled your coolant bottle, check the small rubber hose that trails off to the right of your coolant bottle. If coolant has been dripping out...you'll see it there.

But that smell certainly sounds like coolant. Also, if any was splashed on/around your new engine...it will smell like that for an easy week+.

on the battery cover and stuff there is some white stuff that looks like it got splattered around???

the cover being the plastic black piece over the batt? I dont see how it could have gotten on there, whatever.

Anyway its most likely residual coolant that might have spilled during fill up or when they were putting the engine in.

Your ac most likely needs to be refilled, but I doubt that sweet smell is from your ac.

I am 90% sure its coolant. if the smell is still there after a few days of driving tell them they need to check for leaks.

Ok ill give it a few days and see if i can still smell it...

I dont believe im losing any coolant, my coolant light came on when i was driving the other day but I have read that it's normal at high RPM's???

Also i checked that hose to the right of the coolant tank and i dont see any leaks but is that tube supposed to be hooked into anything? I pulled it up to check it and it's just a small tube with nothing on the end of it? I reached down where it was and didn't feel any connections or anything.

Yea you do. I wasn't going to mention anything lol.

Coolant sensor tends to go bad. Does start at high rpm's, which you shouldn't really be doing on a new motor. Anyway, the coolant sensor starts to go bad at high rpm's and eventually goes out and causes the light to stay on all the time.
Choices are, you either buy an new bottle, or you unplug the connector leading to the sensor. If you do unplug it(there are threads to show you where), then you've basically lost all ability to detect a leak in the system other than the idiot gauge(and don't depend on that).

The hose you speak of is the overflow hose. Yes, it is normally just that short. A lot of us have extended that hose all the way out the bottom of the car just in case because............we hear of people all the time that have a little bit of overflow come out that tube(maybe from filling too much, or some other reason) and when it does, it tends to drip on the power steering connectors located way down there and next thing you know, you have no power steering because of corroded connectors. Now you end up having to clean the piss out of those hoping that you don't have to replace that harness or bypass the connectors by soldering.

ok yea i know about breaking the engine in i was just merging onto the freeway and uh hm (had to speed up) lol.

You could also buy some engine degreaser and clean the engine bay. That should help remove the smell a little quicker than burning it off.

There are many ways to break in an engine (at least for piston engine from "what I read") and there is no solid evidence to show high rpm can kill in early mileage. The similarity among all these different methods is "varying rpm". Sorry to go off topic.

I mean racing beat and every engine builder on the face of the earth recommends specific break in instructions. depending on what parts were replaced, they would recommend a break in of 1k or 2k changing the oil and 500 miles. . But what do they know they just build the things.
