I can't change into gear! : ( HELP!
I was driving today when my car just freaked at a redlight. The car wouldnt go into gear, it was the strangest thing. Can someone help me on what to do from here? It's an 04 and I've never had a problem with it until today. Keep in mind that the car is stuck in neutral, doesnt shift into any gear.
Please PM me or write back here ASAP. Thanks. |
what happened after that?

Your Throw Out Bearing Probably Went Out. That Happened To Me Before. Luckily The Ppl That Installed My Clutch Installed A New One For Free.

To answer the first question, I just towed it back to my house because I dont have the money to repair it right away. Just wondering how much I'll probably be spending and what parts do you think I'm going to need, that way when I do take it to a shop I have an idea of what I'll be looking for.
My throw out bearing? Sorry dont know much about cars, just drive them heh. Can it be anything else besides that? Do you think it's my whole clutch or transmission? |
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/clutch1.htm This Site Shows You How A Clutch Works. It Also Shows What A Throw Out Bearing Does. You Dont Need A New Tranny Or A New Clutch But Since You Have To Drop The Tranny I Suggest You Just Replace The Clutch Cause Its Expensive To Drop The Tranny. Altogether It Cost Me 1000 Bucks For A new clutch And Installation

It can also be the clutch slave or master cylinder, or a broken hydraulic line. I had a BMW with a hydraulic clutch linkage that randomly would not shift. It became more frequent, and eventually I figured out it was the slave cylinder. Rebuilt that (no harder than a wheel cylinder) and all was fine. First thing I'd do (after screaming and swearing) would be to check the clutch fluid level. Next thing would be to look at the clutch release arm (assuming it's visible - haven't crawled under my 8 yet) and have someone step on the clutch. See if it moves. If it does, then things have to come apart. If it does not move, then check the pedal and hydraulics. Ken |
I had this happen to me today at almost every stop and barely made it home. Did you ever get this resolved?

this same thing occurs when the clutch disk center hub disintegrates into pieces, has happened to quite a few RX-8 owners
takes a new clutch to repair it |
I've read a bent shifting fork can do it too.
Have you tried it since you had it towed home. If it's something simple like this may the tow ride home jarred it loose. That's happened to me before on another car. |
Thanks for the help guys but just to let you know what it was my AFE SS. The bushing had gone out. I will be getting a new one put on by Richard whenever I get around to shipping it to him. Stock shifter is in right now = :(

I Had The Same Problem But I Can Only Shift When The Car Is Off. I Am Changing My Slave Cylinder First Because After Hours And Hours Of Reserach And Symptom Description To Blogers, And A Visit To The Mechanic That Was Set On Changing Entire Clutch!!! I Figured It Is Worth Changing The Slave First ($50 Is Better Than $1000 Plus).

Thats what happened when my trans blew :(
