How to fix Air Conditioner unit?

Yesterday while I was driving doing about 60 I noticed that my car was no longer blowing cold air. I meant it completely stopped. Usually when I turn my A/C on my car will almost instantly blow cold air but now the car won't even make a noise to show that its on. Now my question is how do I recharge this baby. Don't say a shop because I'm in Los Angeles and these people are crooks. Also, I have worked on ky car before so all I need is some instructions/suggestions. Please no BS because its too hot for this right now.

If it suddenly stopped cooling the problem may be something other than charge. The usual DIYable low charge comes from a slow leak and the AC becoming wimpier over time.

You said there's no noise. Does the fan blow? Does the compressor clutch engage? If the compressor clutch does not engage, check the fuse. If the fuse is OK, put a pressure gauge on the low side fitting to see if there's any charge. (Or just momentarily push in the pin on the valve to see if something comes out.) If there's no pressure at all, then it's likely you took a rock through the condenser, or had some something equally catasrophic.

If there's some pressure, you can buy refrigerant and an inexpensive pressure gauge at Wal-Mart, Autozone, etc. That will come with summary instructions on charging.

@Ken Dude we just checked and the ac unit isnt even clicking on. We checked the fuses and everything. I might have a busted AC unit.. (Crying)

Try recharging it but like Ken mentioned it's probably a catastrophic failure.

Heres the problem.

just checked the pressure by pushing in the pin and got no kind of pressure. Now my next question.. WHAT NOW??

You told us to not say "Take it to a shop." That kind of limits it.

No pressure means no refrigerant. That's why the clutch doesn't engage: there's a low pressure safety switch. Losing refrigerant that quickly means something significant is wrong. Maybe a blown compressor (seal failed) or a rock through the condenser.

I'd cry, too. :(
