How Can i Fix the ssv?
 

So yeah one day on my rx8 my engine just starting running like shit idleing low and really rough and i feel like i lost like 30% of the power in my car so i took it to te mazda dealership to see whats up they said my ssv was stuck open and that they wanted to charge me an arm and a leg i was wondering if anyone out there knows where i can find an ssv and explain how i could install it myself

you might get an answer if you were to provide any info about the car.

Doesn't that have something to do with the intake manifold? Might have to drop the engine to fix it, probably carbon build-up...

well i dont know to much of the history of the car all i know is that i bought it put a full borla exhaust kit and an aem cold air intake. they said the ssv was stuck open do to carbon build up, is there any way that i could just clean the carbon build up or i would have to buy a new one. also how to work on it and what not

when you get it fixed, install an oil catch can.

judging by your ability and the manner in which you speak and/or type, you probably want to just pay them to do it.

do a search for DIY on carbon clean up made by nycgps. i also got the same error code 2 weeks ago. but i havent been able to do te clean up yet, due my car being in the bodyshop due to hurricane ike.

Really easy fix....remove the alternator and remove the SSV...clean with carb cleaner or like...and re-install

umm no... it doesn't clear the firewall.... i have first hand experience with that watching my dealer lower the engine out of the car :eyetwitch


Best you can do without yanking the engine is to take the upper manifold off and spray it and try turning it by hand to free it up.

You are thinking the APV..not the SSV

Both the VDI and SSv can be removed with the engine in the car

I agree with dannobre...it really is a simple fix.

Make sure the valve is actually dirty enough to stick it and its not the vacuum fittings or electrical connector.
just grab the vacuum arm and try to move it a little. it doesnt take much force--so dont try to manhandle it. if it moves freely then it is something else.lets us know how it turns out.

+1 move the actuator by hand - you will know if it is stick.

Then you can get a vacuum pump (like from a brake bleeder set) and manually actuate it to see if it goes.

If it does; then switch the solenoid with the VFAD one and see if the code goes away. If it does then it is the solenoid - not the SSV itself.

They tend to get stick easily..I have fixed 4 to date.....they always were sticky valves

They can often be moved by hand...but the actuator hasn't got enough balls to do it when they are gummed up

That was why I said use the vacuum pump...do you think the vacuum pump might be too strong too? Got me curious now.

Hard to say...I found with the first ones I fixed that at first I thought it was the solenoid...cause it seemed to move by hand...but after i f**ked around changing the solenoid and it didn't work...that
i just cleaned the valve...and put a bit of motor oil on the pivots...they all worked

The solenoids have been around on Mazda cars for years and they seldom fail

I am having the same problem with my 8. I just got back from the dealer and they said it was stuck open and the whole $3000 fix job.....
I am able to move the SSV by hand, so I don't know know if they meant it was stuck or just wouldn't close....it is moving by hand, so I don't know. Any input? Thanks for everyone's help.

Also noticed that it is idling real low after moving the ssv by hand earlier. I really got on it for a test drive and the engine light hasn't poped back on yet. Only drove it for a little bit tonight though.....any input?

seafoam it then drive car at 6k+ for 30 seconds... not saying seafoam helps the situation, but will help the motor be able to run at 6k+ for 30 seconds :P

This just popped up in my car but I think my APV is blown also. Soon as it got down below 40* here I started hearing a sound that I now think was the APV motor whining loudly under the hood. I couldn't figure out where the noise was and it wasn't dependent on RPM so I wasn't too worried for the functionality of the car. Then last night the CEL came on, Man Intake Valve Stuck Open, and I had it cleared. This morning when I started the car no whining from the front so I am starting to think the APV died and left the valves open. I will be looking deeper into this. On both the old 85 GSL-SE and the 90 GTUs my dad wired the 5th and 6ths open and we haven't seen many issues. I've also noticed since it's thrown the code that she seems more responsive to the throttle. I am tempted to just leave them open and get an accessPort and set it so it won't throw a CEL so I can pass inspection next month.
