If your under 100,000 you can go to the dealer and say you have an issue with hot starting. More than likely you'll need a new engine.
The engine has a 100,000 mile warranty on it.

Tell us a little bit about the cars history. Mileage/modifications/automatic/manual.

hot start

the engine only has about 30000 miles on it. its a 2004 car tho. it back to mazda and they said it needed new coils and a new cat. did the coils and made no difference. another garage said there is no problem with the cat!! confused mazds asked £3500 +vat for a coil and cat change

Hot starting rotary engines are relative to low compression. Still sounds like you need a new engine.
You could try a Seafoam. Or the Mazda internal engine cleaning product. (ZoomZoom Cleaner)

A catalytic Converter really has no affect on hot starting. It will affect higher RPM power loss. If your not suffering from a power loss then I would think the cat is OK.

Majority of hot start issues are signs of a bad engine. Low Compression.
I would suggest a compression test. That will tell you what condition the engine is in.

Listen to Easy_E1, since your car is out of warranty i'd get a compression test done and start from there.

Instead of wasting 3500£ from the dealership i think that you should also see what the prices are for the coils around here even if it doesn't look like a coil problem.

Mine seems to be unhappy about starting when hot, but starts. It's idling a little rough lately, too. A recent oil change didn't help. I'm wondering if it's because of the crazy heat wave(s) we've been having here, but maybe I need spark plugs. I just turned 52,000 miles. I'm sure my dealership will be happy to sell them to me. lol

Why do you think an oil change will help with hot starts or running rough ? Change plugs , coils and wires, maybe even seafoam it,then report back, in the correct section. There are enough post's in here with your symptoms, just search.
