High pitch screatching noise when attemtping to turn over, wont start!

Ok, so my rx8 started making a really bad high pitched noise when attempting to start about 3 weeks ago, I was told that my starter may be shot, so I went ahead and bought a new starter thinking its gonna fix my problem.

Wrong, it made the same high pitched noise the old starter made and still won't start. I don't know if this has any effect on what might be wrong, but I had a brand new clutch installed by a friend of my fathers, two days later the car started having this problem. I'm pretty much stumped on this one, also I'm not familiar with these kinda things so thats probably why, any help would be appreciated because as of right now the cars just sitting in my garage and it's my everyday driver

Usually , the screeching is when the teeth on the starter and the teeth on the fly wheel dont mesh properly,if you drop the starter and shine a flash light onto the fly wheel, is it shiny or gouged on the side of the teeth ?

What causes them to not mesh properly? and I can check in about an hour.

If the gear in the starter is worn , if it isn't installed properly ( not likely tho) ,if the solenoid doesnt throw the starter gear far enough,. Try removing the starter and lubing the shaft the starter gear rides on.

Likely the airpump :)

Flooded?

man what a fucking pain this is! Tried pop starting it down my driveway too take it too a shop to look at it, and well it didn't quite go as planned lol. I have a feeling its also flooded, but i cant even get the engine to turn over to de-flood it. I'm taking the starter too a buddy of mine to look at tomorrow to see if it could be anything wrong with it.

If this is coincidal with the clutch replacement by your friend, it sounds like something relating to the flywheel or bell housing was not assembled properly, resulting in a mis-alignment of the starter and the ring gear on the flywheel.

Sounds like the transmission / bell-housing needs to come back off and determine the misalignment or misassembly of the various components.

I'm guessing the bell housing is not fully or properly mated to the motor, causing the starter gear to not quite reach the ring gear on the flywheel.

(dannobre: NONE of the symptoms is indicative of the air pump! His starter gear is not engaging properly and turning the engine....)
