HELP - Is my engine toast????

Hi all,

I am a very concerned new owner of a 2004 55K miles RX8. Only bought it last week and everything was going great until last Thu night.#

Started the car from cold. Drove 200 yards to the end of the road. Went to pull out and the engine 'bogged down', dipped the clutch to get the revs up and it started mis-firing with loss of power. Assumed a 'flooded engine'.

There is an amber check engine light on.

Spent all day today on attempting to get the engine running. Acheived perfect running for around 2 minutes but it just keeps dying and sounds like it is running on 1 rotor. Pull the plugs again. Clean and the same thing happens.

Coil packs? Fuel? Lubrication?

Has anyone got any suggestions or have I bought a bad one???

Cheers

suggestions:
- get the CEL code read. Either borrow a scanner or you can even rent them from many auto parts stores.
- if it were flooded, it wouldn't be starting so I'm not sure that's the problem.
- how do the spark plugs look?

you might want to consider having a compression test done

Thanks for the replies.

I will source a new set of coils and see what happens.

I will let you know.

People, do not just replace parts blindly or you will be costing yourself money unneccessarily. Replace only the bad coil(s) if you find any. The tool is only $14

+1 to advice from Team. Confirm the CEL your getting is a misfire before you throw money at coils.

If you are going to acquire coils then personal recommendation is to spend a little more on the kit from Black Halo Racing: http://blackhaloracing.com/.

Thanks for all the input guys.

I have now fitted a full set of OEM Mazda coils and SHE LIVES!!!!:):):)

Fired up first turn, starts easier and pulls stronger,

I just need to put the 'Check Engine' light out now (misfire on cyl 2).

Any suggestions apart from disconnecting the battery as I don't have the radio code?

Do I need to visit a UK dealership to get it extinguished?

Thanks again
