having issues with idling, occasional missfires and running lean
to start, im aware that its possible its a compression issue... just hoping that its not, hoping to get some suggestions on what I should look before going and getting a compression test done (local shop charges ~$175 to do it)
so, as the title says im getting a code for running lean https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...bfe072f16c.png that along with the rough idle i assumed I was having a vacuum leak, probably a major one... i also thought I could hear something that sounded like a leak/hissing, i made a video to capture the sound, but it turned out sounding like shit... ill get a better one later if you guys think it will help.... I've had an AEM cold air intake installed in the car since early spring... and only just recently had the running lean code start, aside from the inital time when the car was learning the new intake... decided it wouldnt hurt to have it relearn everything so disconnected the battery for about half an hour and held the break down for part of it to see if forcing it to relearn would help at all... it did seem to smooth some of it out, but as you will see its still not great and im still getting the running lean code. I went out and bought a vacuum testing pump kit, hooked it up and pumped it to 25 psi of vac, it stayed there really steadily for over a min (the needle moved from the top side of the 25 line to the bottom side of the line) I picked up a can of mass air flow sensor cleaner, by the time i got back it was pretty dark though, ill give that a good cleaning in the morning either way, but i dont really expect it to make much of a difference... I have the sakebomb coil kit / wires / ngk plugs that were all installed less than 16k miles ago, i have not replaced the battery yet... but wouldnt think that would cause it to run lean? |
update, cleaning the maf helped some of the searching for idle but it does still do it, just no where near as pronounced.... and still getting the running lean code... havent had a noticeable misfire since the battery disconnect though.

Did you plug the VFAD nipple on the upper intake manifold?

If there is a vacuum leak, just spray some carburetor cleaner around and see if your car revs up at any point.

not sure why it didnt show up when I first used the vacuum pump to test but I found a vacuum leak, wasnt a large one but it got rid of the running lean code so far. (only put about 15 miles on today but it auto cleared itself on the first startup after fixing)
the engine still has a little more shake to it than it used to, not really sure whats up with that, and i still hear the noise I thought was a vacuum leak... could just be that i never noticed how much more airflow noise there is right at the top of the intake after adding on the CAI and it could be a completely normal noise that just stood out while i was trying to figure out wtf was wrong with the car... ill give it a bit of time and see if it straightens out or not, had one really nasty backfire about 2 weeks ago at the start of this whole thing and it kinda had me worried when i wasnt making much progress on finding anything. edit: yeah the vfad was capped, but i had left some of the line there and just tucked it away after capping the end... apparently there was a bit of cracking in that line so i just took the whole thing out and got a cap right at the nipple instead. |

I think I have a similar problem. I have seen others on the forums mention that p0171 is fuel pump related. that's what I've found from my searches

might be possible that a weak fuel pump could cause a p0171, but mine was definitely a vac leak. went away after i found the leak
