Fuel line pops off!!
 

Driving the Eight after recently putting it all back together and replacing injectors and the turbo. I was wanting to get a few miles on it before it hit a dyno, make sure i had all the kinds worked out of it. Long story short, i was heading home and i smell ALOT of fuel, but the car is still running as always. I pull over at a gas statioin, pop the hood, and notice a fine mist of fuel fuming up from the fuel rails under the intake.

The fuel line that connets the two fuel rails had poped loose. I have heard of this happening to another person on the boards on track but i can not remember who it was. I find myself very lucky to have caught this befoer it came fully disengaged from the rail and caused some big issues.

I know it was fully seated after the install, because i am totally perinoid about a fuel system leak. It was double checked and i even install a zip tie around the plastic colored clips that hold the line on (found that idea from the same thread about this happenign to the other person on here).

I think i am going to do away with the plastic factory line connecting the rails all together. Get a short pieve of rubber fuel line and hose clamp it on both rails instead of going the plastic connector route. This could have been alot worse then what it was, I figure hose clamps and the usual rubber line would be a pretty fail safe way to go.

You need to replace that ASAP. We have had several members who's cars burned to a pile of melted RX-8 because the fuel line was not replaced when the engine was. The clip used to connect it to the rail isn't really supposed to be reused. The two that I'm thinking of were just cruising on the freeway when theirs popped off and then the header caught the fumes on fire as well as the rest of the car..

Correct, It will be replaced. It is sitting in my garage as we speak and not moving till its replaced. I plan on tearing it apart tonight, I still believe i am going to go the rubber line route rather then buying a new stock line. I jsut really dont like those cheesy ass clips on there.

Anyone see any issue with using a rubber fuel line and hose clamps rather then the stock line? I really dont see how it would cause any problems. Just moves fuel from point A to point B.

I would say most fuel injection lines would be fine (NOT FUEL HOSE! they're DIFFERENT!)

Yea that fuel hose should be replaced everytime.

Call me un educated here but whats the diffence in the lines. Wouldnt both lines have to deal with the same pressure of the system? Not saying your wrong, jsut dont know what the difference in the hose types are.

Fuel injection hose is build to support higher PSI required by most Multi-Fuel injection system. it has an extra layer of woven material so it's much stronger.

Most people got this wrong and wonder why did their "fuel hose" burst. cuz yea, they got fuel hose, not fuel injection hose.

Just walk into any autoparts store you will notice they sell fuel hose and fuel injection hose.

Im not sure about stock fuel line size are tho, maybe 5/16" ?

if you don't want to play the guessing game, just buy a new stock piece. it solves all the problem.

I will take it apart tonight. I have some hose laying around i will try on it to size it up. Then head to the parts store and get fuel injection hose for it in that size. I jsut really dont trust that plastic clip anymore. Obviously its working for many others but seeing a fuel mist coming form under your intake makes you think a little about what could have been.

there is a note in Mazda's papers that you should NOT reuse this hose.

so I would say Mazda's part is ok as long as you replace them.

Touche . . . i could see how the clip could get warn though -which is why they would say not to reuse it. Just something most people would not think about. If it looks good and you hear it snap into place, you dont really think that its not reusable.

i think it was my fuel line that popped off, or injector?
unlike the OP, it totally came off, gas everywhere and car died.
oddly enough a mechanic was walking by, knew what happened and put it back on.

im taking it to my mechanic sometime this week, was wondering if it was ok to drive for now and if there was anything i need to worry about.

edit* forgot to mention, ever since this happened, it revs to 2.5-3k rpm on a cold start up, didnt do that before.

Necro bump. Was wondering if anyone had any success replacing the fuel lines under the UIM with fuel line or SS line and AN push lock fittings.

Just realized one of my clips seems to be loose and I can't stand dealing with those retarded C clips and lines. Wondering if AN push locks would work. Or I prob might just replace them with 5/16 fuel line and worm drive clamps.

I know this is an old thread but it has helped me. I had the same problem at 80mph on the highway after removing the line and doing some work. I wanted to let everyone know that you can replace the fuel line with a 5/16" quick disconnect to -6an line and not have the problem again. It was about the same price as a replacement mazda fuel line but it is serviceable now. I used vibrant motorsports adapters and summit racing -6an fittings and fuel lines. SO far it has been working great.

Maybe this can help someone else.
