fresh rebiuld engine wont start please help

I just finished rebuilding my 04 rx8 engine and dropped it in. I've tried to start it but it wont start. I'm getting fuel and I'm getting a good spark and still it wont start. I've tried to do the flooding procedure and still no start. I haven't gotten to a compression test yet. but what is the compression reading suppost to be. I think I hear compression because I'm getting white smoke out the exhaust. can anybody help. this is my first rebuild an I'm a little lost at this point.

Does it crank normally? I am assuming you have checked that everything is plugged in tight? ESS, etc. Sometimes the throttle body plug seems in all the way but it is not.

I would also check vacuum on the engine. Did you check the Fuel pump resistor under the air pump? It looks like a little amplifier, it needs to be plugged in.

I'm going to try a compression test tonight when I get off work. I even tried starter fluid

vacuum is way easier to test. I assume you have the battery on a charger? Could be flooded.

Make sure you have everything hooked up properly...

Check fuel pressure.......got gas? :)

You could always try pull start it after you have ruled out any other errors and ommissions

Good luck

A really weird thing with mine when I came to start - the temp sensor was unplugged . That was enough to upset the fuel ratio somehow . Little things ......

If all else fails - pull start the biatch

dannobre 03-09-2011 04:13 PM

? LOL...temp sensor makes a huge difference L)L

sorry it took me so long to get back on. I did a compression test and found out that I have 50 Pei for my front rotor and 45 from my rear rotor. I just got finished pulling it back out and I'm going to start tearing apart again tomarrow

RX8DriftRacer 03-14-2011 09:27 PM

I finished taking the engine apart and found that the groves that the seals sit in have some rust that locked them in the compressed position so I now have to figure out how I'm going to get it out

colesvending 05-23-2016 12:40 AM

Did you ever figure it out why it wouldn't start i traded a datsun 280 for an rx the other day and im having about the same problem. i have spark, fuel pressure, and compression ( covered the intake with my hand while it was turning over and it tried to suck my hand in.) i just changed out the crank position sensor because it wasnt putting out very much voltage.. So i am at a loss any help will be awesome. it also has a massive coolant leak i put it up on jack stands while i was working on it and tried to start it i put like 1 and a half gallons of 50/50 coolant in it so if i got it started i could try to keep it running. well all of the coolant has been dripping out for the last 4 days covering the shop floor.

Also the starter doesnt seem like it is spinning high enough rpms to get it started. i also read on one of these forms to put some 2 stroke oil in the cylinders and spin it around to try to get the engine to start. i also dragged it around a bit went from 1-6th gear about 20 mph....

thanks again!

Better figure out the coolant leak first 😊

Strange that it didn't start when pulled. Something is amiss.

colesvending 05-23-2016 12:15 PM

Yah i planned on trying to fix it, but i was wanting to see if it was going to start. I don't understand why it just wont start.

The coolant leak is like where the motor and transmission meet and from what i have read its either the frost plugs and i have to pull the trans or its the coolant lines to the heater core. Also there was a 4-5mm bolt that the guy i got it from had shoved into a hole in the bottom on the trans and when i pulled it out there was coolant coming out. should coolant be in there the hole is close to the front of the trans. Also what kind or size of bolt goes there.

I also found out that the 04 had a recall on the starters, and that the engine is warranted by mazda till 100k is both of those true? I did watch some youtube videos of the rx start ups and my starter is was slower then those are. It does have a sloppy bigger battery relocate in the trunk.

Loki 05-23-2016 01:32 PM

Yeah starters get slow over time. Get a 2008+ one, it's faster. The warranty is true, but its 100k/8 years, so no luck on an 04.

Is there coolant on the sparks plugs? If so it's leaking into thr engine, which means rebuild time.

colesvending 05-23-2016 02:03 PM

i did pull the plugs multiple times. i just got done talking to a guy on the rx8 uk face book page and he told me that the coolant in the bell housing isnt supposed to be there so he said either the thru bolts arent in or there is a crack in the iron. so i am going to have to pull the motor and check it out i guess.

ZiG 05-23-2016 02:28 PM

Uhhh is this a rebuilt motor, same as OP? Putting your hand over the intake may mean it has some compression, but not nearly enough to run on.

colesvending 05-23-2016 11:52 PM

yea the guy i got it from rebuilt it. but im not sure on the quality of the rebuild. what does "op" mean?

thanks.

Loki 05-24-2016 07:40 AM

Get the compression tested before you pull it. A lot easier to do with the starter attached, and you don't want to put it back in only to find that you have to pull it again for low compression.

OP means 'original poster', ie the guy who started this thread.

You aren't sure if it's a quality rebuild?

I.. I feel like I could take a guess.

Sorry, but, damn. Maybe you will get lucky and the guy missed one of the seals on a tension bolt. But I find it hard to believe it would be pissing that much. But hey, if he forgot one seal I hope he didn't forget anything else. Definitely weird that it didn't run after you tow started it. No, there should not be any coolant in the trans.

For the record, my rebuild would not start on its own and I had to tow start the shit a few times. Make sure you hold it at 3000-4000 rpm for at least 5 minutes after it fires. After my first couple tow starts I got to the point where it would fire with some oil but still died after a few minutes. Finally I got fed up, fired it, and drove in circles for over an hour at varying rpm from 3000-5000 at times. Only then did the compression come up. Over the next 1000 miles it really came to life as everything seated (and probably some hylomar burned off... oops).
