fan questions before I pay for parts

My rx8's cooling fan is almost always going after I turn off the car, while I know this is nothing to worry about, I think after every shutdown is a bit excessive. So I lifted up the airbox and the airbox tray to see if they were both working. I started the cold car and put the ac on, and the fan under the airbox came on, but the fan under the battery did not. Is this normal? I thought with the ac on that both fans should be on low. I checked the fuses and correct me if I'm wrong, but there is only one fuse for both fans, so if one fan is getting power, then the other should to. Yes? I let the car idle for a while, but after about 10-15 minutes I could not get the temp high enough for the fans to come on. So, instead of putting it back together and going for a warmup ride, I am being lazy and posting this. You guys think there is any more tests to try before I buy the parts to rebuild the motors?

Thanks,
Chris

Cricha, there is a post that has a diagram of when and how the fans will operate, if Dan reads this, Im sure he can shed some light on this for you.

Or shoot him a private message, his nic is Dannobre.

I searched and searched, but can not find anyone who has actually done the series 2 motor and shroud replacement. Has anyone done it? Does it work? It's certainly much cheaper. I'm really not looking forward to paying around $170 for each motor. Anybody know a cheaper place than onlinemazdaparts.com?

Have you tried applying power directly to the fan that doesnt "work", or cleaning the connectors.Sorry I cant be more help.

And yes, you can fit the S2 fans to an S1, you also need the shroud as the fan motors are larger. It may be one of the relay's that have failed.

CRO8TIA, as I said, I am being lazy. I could get to the fan below the battery, but I would have to remove the battery and its box. I only checked to make sure it was plugged in.

Do you have any link to a succesful install of the series 2 motors? The post that keeps coming up in the search only gives the possibility and part numbers, but the thread ends without anyone actually installing them.

I have to say, olinemazdaparts.com has really good customer service. They are taking care of a little problem with my fan motor order like all businesses should.

I almost have the fans out. I could only work on it for about two hours before the Louisiana heat got to me. I'll finish getting the fan assembly out tomorrow and have the new motors in by friday. I'll let you guys know if it fixes my problem.

Finished. What a pita. Broke almost all the push style cable ties. Had to rig up zip ties to replace them.

Both fans turn! They are also quiter. Both fans come on with the air conditioning, so if you want to test your fans, just turn on the ac. A short test drive did not have the cooling fan stay on after i turned the car off, but the real test will be after I do some rush hour driving.

Well, I can't tell if my car is acting the way it's supposed to. I just got it a few months ago, so I don't know if the fans have always been prone to staying on after the car is turned off. It certainly does it less now, but the fans will still stay on for a long time after the car is turned off (5-20 minutes). I can't seem to make it happen on demand though. It only does it randomly. If I make 5 stops in town, the fan will come on after 1 or 2 of them. Night or day. Temps between 80-100 degrees. I'm not really pushing the car or anything. I guess I'll have to get something to monitor the temps for real instead of relying on the dummy gauge and the coldness of the air conditioner, which by the way is much improved at stop lights now.

Your just in a very hot climate, my fans typically stay on after I park the car out here too. I have anywhere from 90 to 115 degree weather in Vegas, just be happy your fans are kciking on and cooling it off. :P

I plan on getting something to monitor my temps as well though, always a good idea because by the time the dash gauge moves your in trouble.
