F Me this car sucks (or my starter's shot)

car is an 04 gt w/ manual transmission

long story short, my rx8's starter motor gave up the ghost today. yes, i know it is the starter motor, the trouble is that i need a new one and am unwilling to pay the $800 the dealership quoted me.

what is the best price on a new (or re-man, doesn't matter) upgraded OEM mazda starter? and who has it? and how fast can they give it to USPS and ship it to winnipeg?

Check with mazmart or check our for sale section, maybe a member is selling a used one. If not your SOL.

first the clutch pedal, then the water pump, now the starter. my rx8 has been relentlessly shitty lately :wallbash:

Jedi54 06-28-2010 02:13 PM

why did you email them?
why not just order the part, have them ship it, and quickly install the starter. It's a very easy install.

chrismkay3 06-28-2010 02:17 PM

i live in Canada, if they ship it with UPS or FedEx, i face a ~$250 customs pass through charge. if they ship with DHL, i face those idiots taking a week to deliver it to my house.

the only reliable shipper to here is USPS, so i have to ask if they ship via them, if not i'll purchase one from the dealer

Jedi54 06-28-2010 02:24 PM

I've ordered from onlinemazda parts countless times and USPS is usually how they ship my items so let's hope it's the same for you guys up North and that you're able to order this.

good luck!

chrismkay3 06-28-2010 08:54 PM

bought the dealer one. my rx8 is my only mode of transport and despite the extra cost, i need it back in commision as fast as possible.

at least it's the oem part that i know will work and be the correct high-torque unit despite the exorbitant cost. thank you for the link.

pics to follow my epic side street rescue of my currently stranded and dead mazda...

garrett755 06-29-2010 10:46 AM

If you live in Canada phone the parts dealer for Scarboro mazda in Ontario. I bought my new starter from him and it was at my place in Winnipeg in a few days, he gives discounts to RX8 club members too.

season opener tonight, hope they play well...

and new starter is in, $780 from the dealer. interestingly, the dead starter was an N3Z model, not the N3H-A model that is now in the car. definitely a very worthwhile upgrade, if an expensive one at that.

and at garrett, i live in transcona :p

2tone 07-02-2010 07:11 PM

sorry to hear about your troubles man...but it IS a 6-year old car...everything breaks at some point. glad you got the new starter.

it has less than 100,000km's, it is not very old for critical parts to start failing...

also, this was the car's third starter, the failed unit was not very old at all. weak parts and shitty engineering

the new N3Z Starter is the modded one...better..it also helps if you have a higher CCA battery and a Battery that is not older than 4-5 years...if the starter can't get the Full Juice it won't perform at it's best.

Mazda changed the OEM battery 2 times...

well i assure you that the N3H-A starter performs far better than the "upgraded" N3Z starter ever did... N3Z was for automatics IIRC? my battery is only a few months old and is OEM Mazda (yeah, that died just after i bought the car too)

now can someone point me to some tail light gaskets? :grouphug:

N3Z1 is Manuals
N3Z2 are Auto's

Read this TSB on Starters..

Starters...in actual Fact if you had the N3H1 A (I take it you have a manual RX-8) then your starter was not the one suggested to be replaced (see Bulletin), you have sort of gone back-wards..

Anyway, the N3Z1 and N3Z2 -18-400 Starter in the TSB are no longer the ones now supplied..

It appears US dealers are now using a local Re-manufactured Starter which is also about $100 US Cheaper..

On Tail Lamp Gaskets/Seals...not cheap, about $32 each..

F151-51-163D LHR Gasket
F151-51-153D RHR Gasket

There is also a TSB on this..

canuckistan, we are special...

misread what you said, no i had the upgraded N3Z starter fail on me. i replaced it with the N3H-A which is the only oem starter available in canada, no rebuilds or aftermarket available. this is the car's 3rd starter.

thank you for the tail light gasket p/n

Oh OK...your in Canada..Jeez, how about you fill in your UserCP Details, top left of this page, so WE ALL know where you are from...bloody noobs...:yelrotflm..

No problem mate..

BTW, Here is your new Re man Starter PN N3H1-18-400R0A
If you ever need reference...ask a Canadian Dealer, if this is where you buy and see if the Number exists with them as it does in the US.

:)

I can take your car off you for $250 instead. And you can buy a Honda?

i'd much rather go back to vw or audi (pillars of reliability they be!)

DIY tip for anyone finding this thread through a search:

if you are stuck fixing your starter on a street in the rain, make sure you bring a 1/2 inch drive 14mm deep well socket, 5" extension, and 9" baby breaker bar and you'll get that top bolt out with minimal fuss

If you think VW or audi are the pillars of reliability then you really should stick to the bus. Especially if you are referring to electrical issues...:icon_no2:

Thought so. I had a VW GTI before and the only thing more frustrating than the lack of reliability was the lack of ability of the dealer to fix the problems. Sorry about your luck. Starters on this car don't typically go bad but there is an upgraded unit that is pretty cheap and easy to install if you're so inclinded.
