engine stalling problem .

ok granted that this may not be the best way to start a topic but here goes . l am located in Malaysia (yeah , not excatly a model country)

got a 04 rx8 4 at with about 57k km/s or about 36k miles . jdm model with the navigation and 6cd changer

driving back home , the car engine cut stalled @ the the traffic light .. then managed to get it restarted , then drove it back home .. then when back home , i have to reverse the car up a slope to get into the parking spot , the engine stalled again( rpm dropped very low and eventually zero), all the lights on the dashboard lit up (steering, radiator etc) , but the electricals are working .. got it restarted and parked the car ... next day started the car and tried to repeat the condition in which the problem occured ... basically the car will stall it self when its being reversed up the slope ... so , went to the workshop (borrowed a friends car ) to ask what might be the likely cause , and to setup a time for me to send the car . the workshop said it might be the throttle body motor (or some flap thingy , can`t remember ) ,or something simple like the plug and cable

so the following day sent the car to the workshop , then they checked it , replaced the plugs and cables . it seems to run fine .. then just now the same stalling issue happened again , and the brake pedal which is normal suddenly feels it needs more pressure to work(basically it felt kinda stiff ) just before the whole engine stalls .restart works fine ,anyideas what might be wrong ?

based on a search through the forums , seems to me like a stuck t/b or something , possibly due to the angle which the car has to reverse into .

The throttle body position doesn't have any impact on which gear you are in, or vise versa.

I'd bet it's either failing coils and/or low compression, though there are a few other explanations.

Could be a whole host of things. When mine starts to do this, I clean the ESS and it's fine. But...............yours could be any one of a number as RIWWP pointed out.

the ecentritic shaft sensor ? well gotta have a look at that later ..

edit : after reading your explanation did a search on the forums and lol found a forumer with more or less similar problems . well , if its the sensor dirty that should prove to be a easy fix , https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...c+shaft+sensor

pretty long post in some of the links , but extremely informative .
i dont think its low compression though cause the last compression test performed the car passed it with no problems .. though your suggestions to check the coils might be helpful ..

Go ahead and cleam the MAF Sensor with the appropriate cleaning agent.

ssc67 06-21-2012 05:01 AM

tried cleaning both the maf sensor and the ess sensor , the problem still there .. which has me stumped... it only happens in revrse gear when i am backing up into the parking spot .also notice that despite flooring the pedal , can feel the car is stalling ... ah , i `m beginning to think it could be something much worse though

Just want to make sure...............Only in reverse and at no other time?

yeah only in reverse , ... dunno whether its due to some loose engine part being knocked out of position due to the angle the car is at or not .. previously it was ok .. it began when the car stalled @ the traffic light like what i mentioned in the first post .. well , i did record a video when it happened though..

edit : again it stalled @ the lights ... grrr .. i`m beginning to think there could be blockage in the fuel line somewhere ..or the cat con is screwed .

rtrychk08 06-23-2012 04:42 PM

how full was the gas tank? could it be that you were at such an angle that the gas wasnt near the pick up and it stalled it? other than that i have to agree with the low compression/bad coil

Razz1 06-23-2012 07:55 PM

What happens when you back up on a level street?

TeamRX8 06-23-2012 09:05 PM

Bad trailing coil(s) or spark wire(s)

Low engine compression

the last compression test i did , got about a near 8 on the front rotor and about 7.5 for the back .. which from what i understand is pretty much in the safe zone

nothing happens , works just fine ..

to the workshop i go again . lol

ssc67 06-24-2012 11:23 PM

This just popped into my head , could a cat-converter which is spoilt cause the problems above ?

RIWWP 06-25-2012 07:44 AM

A failing cat acts more as a restriction to maximum exhaust flow, capping your power output at whatever flow area you have left. While possible, your descriptions don't really fit that.

quickimpact 06-25-2012 09:35 PM

Did you try the coils already? Sounds like an easy fix if your compression is fine.

ssc67 06-28-2012 05:49 AM

if i don`t press the gas , but the car is in reverse , its fine ...
had a look under the car , near the cat/gb area there`s what appears to be water leaking out .... pic link below .. wondering whether that could be the problem or not .

long time no post . thanks to evryone who gave the ideas/tips/suggestions , in the end it turned out to be the gearbox problem .. well, took a while to repair cause had to raise the cash .. the gb was damaged very badly .. till flooring the pedal the car will sort of crawl along , then suddenly feel the power come in ..., at the same time during changed the engine mounting .now the car is working nicely .
