engine cranks, but wont start...

hey guys...im hoping you guys could give some advice on probable causes. one night i parked my car and the next morning it didnt start!. i checked the battery and it tested out bad, so i replaced it! then my starter wouldnt disengage so i replaced the starter also.... still no start. i've checked fuses and relays. i even tried push starting my car, NOTHING. my car is cranking over but it aint starting. i have had my ignition system replaced already at the dealer about a year ago. i dont know what to look for... i 've done pretty much everything i can think of....if you guys can help me with this, i would appreciate it. thanks!

Was the engine fully warmed up when you parked the car and shut it down? If the engine was not fully warmed up, it may be flooded. Never shut down a rotary engine without warming it up. Check your user manual for instructions on de-flooding the car. Or check out the DIY section of this forum for other techniques used by members to de-flood the engine. Otherwise if the car is still under warranty, you may want to have Mazda check it out.

flood.

search buddy

i.s.d_se3p 02-03-2009 08:23 PM

if its flooded, thats one hell of some flooding that happen...i've cranked it over and over...ive spent a week and a half trying to get it working! im clueless..

Jon316G 02-03-2009 08:31 PM

Then I assume you've been through these already to verify the engine isn't flooded?

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...ighlight=flood
https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...8&postcount=89

Usually one of these will get it going, unless there is something else wrong.
Have you check to make sure the spark plug wire boots didn't come loose?
How about disconnecting/reconnecting the ESS?

StealthTL 02-03-2009 08:35 PM

Take out and clean/dry the plugs.

While they are out, crank the engine with the pedal to the floor, for twenty seconds or so.

Re-install plugs and connect the right coil to each plug (from front coil - FL, FT, RL, RT)

After a good battery charge, try to start......

Good luck.

Another good idea! Verify the coils are connected to the correct plugs.

Vyndictive 02-03-2009 09:21 PM

unlikely here... but if it is not flooded or spark related... squirt some starting fluid into the little guy and see if it sputters or gets anything... just to see if its fuel delivery.

kushanboom 08-08-2011 09:52 PM

hey same thing happen to me
if engine flooded you need
connect the battery to another car
take out the fuel pump fuse
crank the engine untill you feel the compression again.
replace the fuel pump fuse
crank it again untill engine start.
keep some pauses between cranks to save the starter motor

Cranks, won't Start. HELP!!!

hey guys... My car has been acting up lately. About 3 weeks ago, I took off the muffler and then drove it like that till recently. Was driving to the store and at a stop light, the car just stalled then won't start. Then it will only start when cold but stalls when warm. 2 days ago, I started it again and it started but got a P0301 check engine code (flashing) and when i depressed the clutch, it just stalled. Put the muffler back on and now it won't start but cranks. I assume the spark plugs are flooded. Went to advance and they told me that I have to balance the engine to put new spark plugs on but I looked on all data and it doesn't say so. Anyways, I checked voltage on coils, getting proper voltage there. Getting proper voltage at the eccentric shaft position sensor. Not getting spark. What could cause this?

nycgps 04-27-2013 11:25 PM

balance the engine before putting spark plugs in? talk about full of shit!

are u sure u not gettinf spark? u need can find out with a 6 -7 bucks tool,

Rafa93 04-28-2013 10:22 AM

thanks for the reply. haha he also mentioned that he worked at mazda before. I tried several spark tests and it seemed like i was not getting spark. Im changing spark plugs today and prob doing a compression test. This all happened 2 weeks after I took my muffler off. Maybe when it was off, it was reading a lot of oxygen so it was dumping fuel then making it stall. That is my belief. I put the muffler back on and reset the ECM by pressing the gas pedal 20x.

Karack 04-28-2013 11:57 AM

you mean the brake pedal...

Rafa93 04-28-2013 04:00 PM

yes sorry

engine wont crank

Hi all, sorry not able to start a new thread so I am hijacking one....Essentially, hoping someone can help, Ive scoured the forum and internet for answers..... before I get flamed.

-I moved my 2007 rx8 6spd about 20ft to park it and turned it off in hot weather.
-2 days later went to unlock with my cardkey and it didnt work, used the secondary physical key and opened the door. (the light on the card does flash though).
-tried to turn the ignition with no luck, had to use the physical key. turned the ignition again. all interior lights turn on, windows work full speed, engine does not crank at all(no audible tic-tic sound).
-tried the 10 second pedal to floor deflooding with no luck.
-tried jumping with a car with a weak-ish batterry- no luck.
-fyi: coils,plugs,wires all almost new.

Im guessing:

Starter (is it possible that the key coincidentally doenst work at the same time?)
Flooded engine (but engine does not crank or even try to crank- also key coincidence again?)
clutch pedal not fully engaging (again - coincidence that key doenst work)
key battery (but car wont start even with physical key).
fuse of some kind?
battery (but it wouldnt jump start)
battery terminals (lights all turn on at 100%)

any help would....help.

Thanks,

Mazurfer 07-05-2013 05:35 PM

rx8dem.........................My guess and it's a pure guess..................clutch interlock switch. Coincidence that the card key battery went at the same time.

If it doesn't even attempt to crank, then it ain't flooded.

When you say it wouldn't jump start................I assume it didn't even try to crank at this time either.......correct?

rx8dem 07-06-2013 07:46 AM

No cranking at all. Tried moving around terminals.. Nothing.

Will check clutch. Just thinking its a major coincidence with the key.

Thanks

nycgps 07-06-2013 09:46 AM

does your car "click" when you turn the key to on ?

or should I say, does your security link keeps blinking when you tried to start the car ?

if it does not blink like 3 times a second, the system accepted ur key, nothing wrong with electrical side.

try to take a piece of metal and knock on on ur starter lightly (tap it couple of times) while trying to crank the car (have a helper do it)

try it then u come back to us. cuz it sounds like ur starter is dead.

rx8dem 07-08-2013 01:19 AM

I was about to give up, then figured I would change the key card battery and give it a try....... it started

How is it possible that Mazda would hinge the operation of the car on a frikken remote battery..

Thanks to everyone.;

hey guys dont want to muck up the post but didn't know where to post as I'm new to this forum, i have a 2004 rx8 that i have recently bought, the previous owner told me that the engine dosnt start but it turns over. when i brought it back i managed to start it up by de-flooding it once i got it starting i went to put my foot on the clutch and it just died, mind you that it was revving normally.
any suggestions to what it might be?

nycgps 03-18-2014 12:42 AM

low compression or vacuum leak somwhere.

I have a 2005 Mazda rx8 shinka, it will turn over just doesn't start!!

Okay, this post will be a little long, sorry just trying to explain everything so y'all can help me!!

I drove to MS to purchase my 05 Mazda rx8 shinka back in April of 2016, I purchased this car for 800$ because this car had a locked motor, due to the owner running it hot for so long! The car sat at his shop for over a year looking for a motor. I got it back to my town, and put it in a shop and got the new motor in it. (20k) they put the motor in it and it didn't crank, they fooled with it for 2 months, (every time I came to the shop it didn't look like they have done anything to it. So I got mad and brought it home!!)

Since I have had it one it still hasn't started, we have pulled the spark plus and drained it. My friend did a deflood method on it, still nothing. So we replaced the park plugs, still no start! I was told my starter was good so I bought a crank/knock sensor (still no luck!) I had someone come out today with a computer it's not reading my computer. They guy told me that my computer must not match my engine that that's the problem. I called Mazda and talked to a few people they said it doesn't matter. They swap engines all the time and they don't have to relink the engine to the computer. I am
Completely LOST! I bout this car because I needed a ride!! I've been without a car since last January. Please can someone help me!! I have no clue what else to try!!

NOTE: we've pulled the fuel line and it has plenty of pressure (getting fuel) I watched a YouTube video and they said that the coil packs go out at 20k (that's how many this motor has on it.) it also said that the coil packs are bad if it has spots on the bottom and mine does. (It's getting fire though!!!**) if the coils are bad would it keep it for starting??

Please if you can look at both videos so it gives you a better of an idea on what's going on!! The auto isn't the best but you can still hear everything just sounds better in person!!!

Time to get serious about fixing this.

I have posted before but failed you guys by not attempting to fix it.

Problems started late july 2016
So on a Friday in July I decided to have my oil changed(too lazy:sweatdrop) but I was getting my wisdom teeth out the day after so I didn't drive til it that following Monday.

That Monday I pick my car up and its running great, I go out to eat and come back to my car after maybe thirty minutes and it no longer runs. Cranks but refuses to turn over. I take it back to the garage and they suggest changing Plugs coils and wires and note that the starter looks new(Only have had car for 2 months at this point).

I give him the go ahead to replace those and vroom it starts up... ROUGH but its on and we figure to just let it run and it will go back to normal... but that wasn't the case... The cat got a proper RED hot(I understand they run a littler hotter than the rest). Anyway so I figure that is trashed so I buy a new one of those and nothing has changed...

Which comes to now Sept 7th... The battery is dead but even with a charged battery its hard to start and really has trouble running and sounds AWFUL when it is and if misfires quite a bit....and now I am being forced to get rid of it or fix it... So I want to fix it. I hope to hear soon! :)

Jon316G 09-08-2016 04:44 AM

Compression test should be the next thing you do.

Did the shop buy the engine or did you? If this shop isn't a rotary specialty shop they may have bought a bad engine even though it allegedly has "20k". If they bought it, I'd take it back and 2) familiarize yourself with your state's fraud laws. It's their job to be well informed and competent when and if they're using your money to purchase an engine. If you spent a ton of money on the engine + install fees, it may be worth it to talk to a lawyer, and it would not surprise me if they are trying to take advantage of you someway because if you give them an inch, they'll take a mile.

They also may have forgotten a connector somewhere. You mentioned you cannot establish a link to the ECU, so I would check if one of the ECU connectors is loose perhaps?

Good luck.
