Engine completely cut off after a few minutes, won't start. Everything else is ok
 

My car is literally on the side of the road right now, so I'm a bit panicked and I can't seem to find a solution when I search, though I will keep trying.

2004 MT 200k miles BHR ignition

I replaced one of my BHR coils this morning, and it started right up, sounding great. Took it for a test drive and a couple minutes into it, the engine just turns off. All other systems are fine. The red security lamp is giving me a rapid blink, which makes me think the security immobilizer system has kicked in for some reason.

Someone else had this issue, but didn't check back in with the fix.

It could be many things. The flashing security light doesn't necessarily mean it is an immobilizer issue. So it doesn't crank at all right?

Also check all of your battery connections and grounds, make sure they are tight and corrosion free.

Thanks for the reply 9k. Correct: it wasn't turning at all, and the blinking security lamp really had me panicking because I've never touched that system and was afraid my PCM was fried or something.

It was the 15a engine fuse.

In my haste when I first checked it, I somehow missed the fact that it was blown. Replaced it, started up, fuse blew again. Did some gentle "pressing together" of the BHR connector to the coil I replaced, and it seems to be okay now.

So this has me wondering about that connector (the one that goes into the coil). Is it homemade, and should I be worried? Honestly, the only thing I did to "fix" this electrical short was sort of push the connector bits together. I hadn't taken it apart, just took it off the coil so I could replace it.

The whole BHR kit is only a few months old, and I'm a bit disheartened that I even needed to replace a coil this soon....

I highly doubt it has anything to do with the coils. But did you do all this with the battery connected? Anytime you are doing electrical work you should disconnect the battery or you risk the possibility of damaging something. If the fuse is blowing then you have a short somewhere. If you think it is the BHR harness (doubtful) then that is easy to check with a meter.

But you might be in over your head.

Definitely an issue with the harness. My BHR kit doesn't appear to be as perfect as most everyone else's. After all, I did have to replace a coil after just a few months.

It's all good though. I've been driving it all day since this issue and no problems.

Do you also have the BHR wires or just the coils? Check with Charles of BHR. He stands behind his products and is always helpful to fellow RX8 club members. He is a member too.

Yes, it's the whole kit. I told him about the coil and he's already got a replacement on the way. I haven't bothered him with the harness issue because, now that I know what's going on, I think I've got a good handle on it. I've always found him to be super cool about supporting his products and customers.

Has anyone else heard of this happening from just replacing Coils that aren't BHR? My negative terminal is pretty corroded, so I am going to change it in the morning.

Then you don't have to respond. Some of these threads are old, just trying to find some help. If you don't want to help, then don't say anything.

Had this happen because of my VFID connector pigtail dangling into a pulley. I have a AEM CAI so it just kinda unraveled itself. The entire harness connecting to the MAF sensor can blow that fuse, among a couple other things.

On the BHR ignition bracket it could be rubbing against one of the connectors for the coils as well, shorting and also blowing the fuse. Just check the wiring all around that area.
