engine code 2096 and Torque app Help ME!!!
hey guys my car threw this cel p2096 (Post catalyst fuel trim to lean) about a month ago i used to be able to clean my maf and it would go away, that no longer works anymore.

im wating on my sparkplugs and wires to come in then i replace them. the only other thing i canthink of now is my maf is faulty or my o2 sensor is bad, i think its the o2....reason below i have the app torque and for some reason only one o2 sensor is shown??? i dont know if thats normal or not i have included some screenshots i took below also if it is my o2 sensors how can i tell which one it is?? Seems like you are on the right trail. Are you using a stock catalytic converter? Or have one?

I attached some documents that may help. Seems to be a lot of stuff that can be a cause unfortunately. Keep us updated. Maybe someone can be more help.

Your rear O2 sensor is just about dead, and it just hasn't thrown a CEL for being non-responsive yet. That Mode6 test that it failed proves that. Additionally, when most O2 sensors fail, they fail lean...which is the code you are getting. $150ish from most places, fairly easy to replace, but might be seized in the cat. I recommend bringing the sensor replacement to a corner shop and having them replace it. No other parts need to be removed to get to it, and they can get all the leverage on it you might not be able to, and torch it if needed. Probably cost you $20-30 in labor, tops.

P.s. almost forgot stock cat was replaced when engine was replaced at 92,xxx miles, car now has 109,xxx miles, i don't think o2 sensors were replaced though |

okay guys as an update RIWWP was right on the money......with some WD-40 penetrating spray, a torque wrench, and o2 socket wrench adapter i was able to replace my rear o2 sensor. I cleared the codes and did about 5 drive cycles now, engine light hasn't come back on, also got my car retested for its yearly inspection and it passed this time :boink::boink:
so far everything is good the only other thing I'll do is go back and wrap some wires that were exposed that lead to the o2 sensor plug, also i would like to mention that i don't think my o2 sensor failed/ went bad when i took it off the clip that the wires were connected too had been partially melted so i think that caused it to stop reading. so to anyone else looking to solve the P2096 (post catalytic fuel trim to lean) error check you rear o2 sensor :) |

The mode 6 test is the bank of tests on this screen:
Attachment 223148 The way that told me that your rear O2 was dead was because of the failed test at the top in red. Rich to lean switch time is a test to see how long it takes to flick between a rich signal and a lean signal (narrow band sensors like our rear O2 sensor only return "rich" or "lean". The min/max times shown there is how long it should take to flip between the two, (though the values are actually reversed, but that's Torque's problem), it shouldn't take any longer than about 6 seconds, and 20ms is the fastest it should take. Your's didn't take 65 seconds, but simply never switched. 65k is maxing out the possible recorded value for that test (it's a computer 0-1 bit limitation) The CEL regarding a problem with the rear O2 sensor giving invalid readings supported the conclusion, and the lack of any data coming from the rear O2 sensor (in torque) confirmed it. Glad you got it fixed :) |
