Effects of Gear Grinding

about how many times would you have to grind your gears before everything starts to crumble... not trying this but... i've had a couple gear grinds :( :( :( :( :(

Sajek 03-13-2005 09:06 PM

Me too! Did it today going from 1st to 2cnd :(

Guess a clearcut answer doesn't exist...depends how hard, how long, etc... the grind is. I've gotten grinds that are just little blips due to reacting quickly and got hard ones (like today) when I was accelerating hard and shifted while at around 7-8k RPM in a very comitted fashion

smrx8 03-15-2005 01:51 PM

same here i wonder if iam leting it go to much always happens from 1 to 2 too.

bmcc49er 03-15-2005 05:28 PM

I have trouble with reverse and i have been driving sticks forever. Seems when the car isn't warmed up its a bitch to get it into reverse. i think its in and grind, start again. Once its warmed up it isn't a problem.

LiL BenNy 03-18-2005 02:07 PM

yeah im so scared to grind in reverse... i literally put it in, take it out 3 tiems before i feel safe reversing.. i think i need to get my gear box checked... it feels funny when i shift.... im gettting nervous about htis....

jenkins-crew 03-18-2005 02:15 PM

I grind from 1 to 2 sometimes too, hope my gear isn't getting close to gone....any tranny experts out there????

N8theGr8 03-18-2005 02:15 PM

If I'm not ultra-gentle on the clutch, reverse in my 8 gives me the big stink.

SpinninAgain! 03-18-2005 02:39 PM

It's easy to grind the 1-2 shift if you:
- rush it
- pull the shift lever toward you

To avoid the 1-2 grind:
- pause for a split-second between gears
- pull the lever straight into 2nd, no sideways pressure

Reverse is tough too, very touchy until you get used to it. Take it very slow and easy until you get happy with the car. :)

an occasional grind is OK, if you have constant grinding there could be somethign wrong with your tranny. when you grind it is not actually the gears grinding but the dog teeth not meshing. Still not good to do alot, but it's not gear teath that you normally would think of.

But i know nothing about trannys.

crosswound 03-31-2005 11:17 AM

get it looked at they took mine apart and it stated on my receipt transmission failure and they replaced a bunch of things i had the hard shifting 1st into 2nd when i first had the car and it grinded like a bastard.

so i did the things he suggested and it went away then i had my hard shifting into 4th and also reverse didn't like me very much i finally got annoyed brought it in and told them what was going on.

they tore apart the tranny and had to replace a bunch of parts.

jenkins-crew 03-31-2005 11:54 AM

was it done under warranty?

adrian-1 03-31-2005 12:36 PM

Check this thread if your having 1st to 2nd gear grinding, no shift, or stuck in gear.

crosswound 03-31-2005 02:50 PM

well so far its been covered under warranty its back in the shop because my 6th gear keeps popping out into neutral at highway speeds and i can always smell this oil or gas smell all the time too.

i have some luck this time the last incident where my clutch blew they blamed it partially on me.

jenkins-crew 03-31-2005 03:10 PM

But they replaced your clutch under warranty? How did you get them to do that?

When its not warmed up its just a bitch, period. I have adopted implementing a slight pause in between shifting gears. Seems to help but it suck to always do that. What can you do? The dealer claims they haven't found anything wrong with it. When it gets colder next fall I'll see to it that I leave it overnight at the dealership and show them first hand the problem.

crosswound 04-02-2005 11:14 AM

my clutch wasn't covered all under warranty they supposedly made me pay for labor but people are telling me labor is free if you get the part from the dealer i don't know.

but so far with the tranny problem its been covered under warranty, thank god!

i just called today and they said visually nothing looks wrong with 6th gear. whats nice is before i brought it in for my 1-2 and 4th problems 6th was a smooth gear.

now it doesn't work is what gets me so they are just going to order a new 6th gear looks like i won't have the car for a week again and drive around in a rental.

awe you beat me too it....but you are correct it is the dog collar that makes the grinding sound...b/c the gears are always moving and ingaged with eachother......only the dog collar moves to engage the driveshaft with whichever gear you want your baby to be in.:D

KYRX8 04-05-2005 07:46 AM

so, if i read this correctyl, i can replace my 2nd gear shift fork and the grinding will be gone?
If so, how hard is it to replace that fork? Im not going to do it myself but does it call for a rebuild or is it something they can do when installing a new clutch and flywheel?

crosswound 04-08-2005 01:00 PM

got my car back shifts better than when i first got it although i still miss reverse sometimes but thats because i'm a idiot.

The reason for your reverse gear problem is that you have no true reverse gear on the RX8 six speed. But rather, you have an "idler" gear that tries to engage first, but with no syncro ring. So if if does not engage, put your chutch in, place shifter in nuetral, let out the clutch and do it over again. Make sure that you are at idle, and not moving.

You should do 2 things.... 1) Install synthetic oil in your gearbox and rear end, (Check owners manual for spec.) 2) Think as you shift. Make sure that your clutch peddle is fully depressed, then shift. All your problems should go away!!

Already out Synthetic oil in the tranny about a month ago. Same shit, if not worse. I am actually thinking that they may have not topped it up. I think some friggin arms between 1st and 2nd is out of place or need to be tighten or something. Its happening less these days because its warming up in Toronto.
