Eccentric Shaft Position Plate Orientation

Hi there fellow RX8 Family,

We'd like to know the symptoms of a backwards eccentric shaft position plate.

Engine installed has new Apex Seals, Gaskets, Good Aluminum Housings, Good Iron Plates.

When we crank the engine, it won't start and the exhaust smells unburnt. We also tried starter fluid spray and it is not igniting too.

Do you think we got the plate 180 degrees out of phase or perhaps backwards?

What is the best way to verify the eccentric shaft position plate is installed in the correct orientation?

The coils and spark plugs produce spark.

The images show there is 2 large flat spots together and 1 large flat spot on the other side. Should we line up the "BTDC 5 Degrees Rear Rotor mark" to the eccentric shaft sensor and then look into the Rear Housing Leading Spark Plug Hole to verify the rear Rotor Combustion Face is seen through the Leading Spark Plug hole?

Looking forward to reading your thoughts.

I hope ya'll had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Take care and Happy Holidays,

Mark

AFAIK it can only index one way.....make sure the white dot/Mark faces away from the engine ....

The white dot/mark currently faces away from the engine, however, can it be 180 degrees rotated the wrong direction?

I wonder if there's anyway to "TDC" the front Rotor and install it on based on the images attached? What tooth or position would you align the position plate to the eccentric shaft sensor?

Thank you in advance :)

The way the Index pins are set it only goes on one way. Give it a try 😊

the plate only goes on one way.

if it is a rebuilt motor can the mounting hub be installed out of phase? I have never looked into this. I would imagine there is some sort of key system to get the hub timing right also.

It only goes on one way, but the S1 and S2 trigger wheels are different as are the front covers. So the only way I can think of to possibly screw it up might be to have have the wrong wheel.

You can ignore the hub timing comments above.

what did you end up doing to get it started? i am in the same situation right now with a new engine and thought this might of been the problem.

Try resetting the ESS. It's usually needed with a new engine since the profile is different.

On a Series 1, stomp the pedal 20 times in 8 seconds and you will see the oil gauge sweep.

On a Series 2, disconnect the battery, wait for 5 minutes, and stomp the brake pedal once.
