I'm the original owner of a 2006 Mazda RX8. A while back, the dash parking brake, ODS and ABS lights began staying on. I've read about and do the reset: Turn the key to the accessory position. Then turn the wheel all the way to the left and right, then back to center. Then turn everything off. Finally, start the motor ... and the lights are off. But a few minutes later, they all come on again. I've taken my car to the dealer. But after charging me the diagnostic fee, they told me they can't figure out how to fix it.
Any ideas on how I can repair this would be greatly appreciated!
Brake light is a good call ^^
Could be a failing wheel speed sensor. There's one at all 4 corners on a manual and it's what the brakes and stability control have in common. The red brake warning is more serious though. Is the brake fluid reservoir full? The dealer should have been able to read the trouble codes. If they can't do that.. never go there again.
Wow! I'm blown away to have so many helpful responses so quickly! Thanks!! All 3 brake lights work. The dealer read the codes and showed me the screen. Everything checked out okay. That's what has them so confused they don't know what to do. The brakes themselves are perfect. I just overhauled the brakes last month. But I wasn't aware or any wheel sensors? The dealer did say they thought it could be the steering sensor. They said they'd need to replace the entire steering column to change it. And they said they can't get the parts because everything is discontinued. They said their only option would be to just start replacing things helter-skelter as a hit and miss trying to fix it. I was thinking about trying replacing the CPU. I can get one for about $250 from a company online that specializes in those. What does everyone think about trying that? And what do I do to change the wheel sensors? I live in Virginia. I can't get the car inspected if the parking brake light is on.
I really appreciate everyone' help! I guess all us RX8 folks are a family!
Definitely do not replace the computer, that's not the problem and you can't just swap computers from another car, they need to be coded to the key, the ABS system, etc. You'll need the dealer.
Steering wheel sensor could be it... But any of the sensors would throw a code, that's how the car knows to set the warning lights. It's bizarre that they can't find any codes. Is there another dealer you can visit who might be a bit less useless?
If there is ANY way you could get record of what codes that they were, or go somewhere like an autoparts store that does check codes for free to give you an idea of the concern that would be extremely helpful.
If it is a rear wheel speed sensor, I might have an extra sensor. If it is a front wheel speed sensor, that is integrated into the hub and requires replacement of the complete hub. If it is only the wire damaged on a front speed sensor, I might have an extra wire.
If it were your steering column, you would likely know because your steering would be extremely heavy most likely so I doubt the problem is there.
Also about the brake job... what work was completed? Parts replaced? Who completed the work?
Do the lights reilluminate at a stand still, or once you start moving?
How are your tires? All the same size and matching amount of wear?
Also if you can test something.... find a empty parking lot, preferably with nobody around at all so you can avoid people bothering you. Get your car up to approx 30 mph. Hit the brakes HARD. Do your tires lock up completely, or does the ABS function as it should?
