Cylinder 2 misfire

Had a check engine light so I went to go get it checked out at my local autozone. There were two entries that both said "Cylinder 2 misfire". Symptoms are a ticking sound coming from the engine and slow acceleration in first gear at low rpm, but when cruising on the highway, it drives/accelerates fine. The guy there told me it could be the injectors, but I'd like other inputs. Thanks for your time!

what was the code? Ignition is the answer to 90% of these questions, so how long since you last changed the coils, wires, and plugs?

DavidR 05-26-2011 05:18 PM

Okay, I know it's a little late, but thank you for the input! I'll officially know what's wrong with my car tomorrow morning.

I had the same code, tested the coils and one was bad. Dont drive too much with that, could do engine damage.

Yea. I'm betting you need to replace the coils, wires, and plugs. We could help you with that since you are in Houston. Much cheaper than taking it somewhere.

Replaced the spark plugs and wires. 3 of the spark plugs were shattered. The check engine light is gone, but my car is still slow to accelerate from 0-2k rpm :(

How many miles are on the coils? How old is the air filter?

DavidR 05-27-2011 05:17 PM

Not sure on the coils, but the air filter could use a change. I bought this car around Feb. 2008

J8635621 05-27-2011 05:42 PM

Probably the coils. How many miles have you put on them?

DavidR 05-27-2011 09:38 PM

I got the car used with around the low 50k miles on it, and now it's at around 71k miles. So maybe around 20k-25k miles

Yea replace those

Having the same problem... 2007 w/ 58,000~

CEL code was "cylinder 2 misfire" as well. Symptoms: power loss, white smoke coming out from the hood, and stalling when rpm goes too low.

Also from Houston!

Smoke? Yeah.. Visit the dealer and get a new engine under the 8 year/100000mi warranty.

And he'd better do it now, there's likely less than 3 months left on it.

I went to the closest Mazda dealership, Deeter Mazda on 59 south, thinking it was my engine that's in need.

They ran a diagnose, and just called this morning saying that they need to replace the radiator, $800~, and the ignition coils + spark plugs, $900~. (prices include labor costs)

The prices seem pretty absurd... On top of that, they don't want to run a compression test unless they replace everything mentioned.

Does this seem fair? I'm thinking of replacing the radiator, ignition coils and spark plugs at this small auto repair shop with the mechanic who had own a couple of RX7s.

It makes sense to replace those items, white smoke from a cracked radiator and poor idling from old coils. You're right, you can buy the parts much cheaper online and DIY. BUT, I don't understand their reluctance to do the comp test to figure out if it's even worth putting the money into that engine. Radiator has no effect on compression, neither do ignition coils. If they won't do it, find another dealer who wants your money more :)
