coolant system problems. need help!
 

hey guys.

so, about two weeks ago, my radiator failed on me and needed to be replaced. (I have a 2005) I found a replacement on amazon, as well as a set of hoses because I figured that I might as well change those out while I had the car up anyway. I followed a few DIY tutorials that were posted here and eventually got everything changed.

the big problem that I am having is now the car is over heating after about 20-30 minutes of sitting idol and it is shooting collant out of the reservoir's over fill hose. (the small hose next to the radiator cap. I figured there probably was air in the line and I may have over filled the system so, I have burped the system and drained some of the fluid out but, it is still having the same problem. also, after the car heats up, it starts to make a loud BUMP every once in a while. I figured it my be air trying to escape but, i am not sure. Can anyone help me? i am on the verge of just bringing it to the dealership and be done with it.

What hoses did you replace exactly? And when you say you burped it, how did you burp it exactly?

I replaced all three radiator hoses. the two uppers and the one lower. as for burping, I took a funnel and put it into the fluid reservoir, added fluid until there was a bit in the funnel, as per one of the DIYs, turned the engine on, and watched it as air bubbles would be pushed out. if the fluid dropped out of the funnel, I would add a bit more and continue to monitor the levels. At the point the fans would kick on, the system would rush a ton of fluid into the funnel, and I would have the car turned off while I caught fluid as it over flowed.

the only thing i did different that the DIY said to do was to use a "Spill-free" funnel, only because I do not own one and have not been able to find one in town. I am probably going to order one on amazon today but, wanted to post here and talk with a few people before I did.

Which upper hose beside the main on on the top of the radiator? Or do you mean just the three separate large hoses? If it was one of the ones that has a brass restrictor in it and you did not remove and reuse the restrictor then that is your problem.

It is the upper hose, going from the radiator, connecting to the brass restrictor (I figured it was just to redirect the hoses so they could fit) and the hose going from the brass restrictor, to the engine.

I reused everything except the old hoses and hose clamps. all three sets of hose rings were replaced.

If you did not change any of the smaller hoses on the coolant reservoir or heater hoses then I suggest checking them to insure the hoses and restrictors in the hoses are not clogged. In two of the coolant.heater hoses there is a little brass pill that restricts flow. There was also another one added to fix the "marbles in a can" issue.

i had one of those brass restrictors get clogged after a coolant flush years ago. cheap insurance so swap them out

Yep we learned about these brass restrictors and how important they are the hard way after installing the full autobahn hose kit on a fresh rebuild. The engine fired up and idled fine, but would overheat within a couple of minutes. Then it hit me, I remembered a thread about the brass pill. We had not taken them out of the stock lines. As soon as we reinstalled them the car was fine and has been running for 40,000 miles now.

But you reused the restrictor, right? You said 30 mins after sitting in idle. What happens if you drive it at speed. Does it still overheat? If it's only overheating in idle, could be a fan issue. Are BOTH fans turning on?

I used the same brass restrictor from the original hoses.

I just drove the car around the neighborhood and was only able to get about 1.5 miles before it over heated and started to spray coolant out.

yup, both of the fans kick on

I suggest burping the system using the factory method (lifting the front, revving the engine up and down, etc). If that doesn't change anything then you need to pressure test the cooling system.
